New guy with 2009 STi

Hey all, I'm new here. I'm a 29 y/o career US soldier and just traded in the pickup for the dream car. I only dreamed of it before since when I was 25 or so insurance for it was damn near 4000/yr. Now have a clean record and insurance is at 90 a month, and I'd like to keep it that way hehe, or better.

Just moved to some great driving country, eastern Oregon, lotsa canyons and mountain passes. I'm not sure what they are using up here... but they are definitely crafty. A lot of forest, brush, and elevation changes for them to hide in. Luckily most of the cruisers I see hiding are Dodge Chargers which have a very distinct profile... but there is a wide range of other vehicles for the territory, a few different pickup trucks and I think I've spotted a few unmarked Crown Vics.

I don't drive at insane speeds that would get me put in jail, but when I was here years ago I got a ticket for 59 in a 55. Ridiculous I say. SOOOOO for my first car mod I'd like to get 360 degree protection preferably something discreet or entirely invisible as well. Lots of great posts and lots to product choose from. Ok time to start shopping and thanks to TSI+WRX for the referral to this awesome site.

Well, welcome to the forum.

If you want 360 degrees protection.. I suggest running a V1.. I don't know your area so I am not so sure about laser protection...

You actually trust any advice that TSI+WRX gives ya? Just kidding, he is a really good dude.

Anway, totally rural driving like what you describe definitely is V1 or STi territory. My recommendations for windshield mount radar detectors would be either a STi or a V1. My recommendation for a remote installed RD would be a STi-R.

With whatever RD, you will then want to compliment it with either a LI or a Blinder jammer.

I think I am going to go with a V1 to start out with, the credentials are great and I think I can handle the extra chatter, it's pretty quiet out here and when I'm driving fast I tune down the music anyway because I like to hear the road and car.

Ultimately I'd set the budget around 2k. My fantasy setup would have kill switches mutes and other controls going through the STi stereo steering wheel buttons.

This is all entirely new to me I've never owned even a radar detector.

Welcome to one of the most beautiful states in the Union (it gets purtier as you go west). My extended family is an all Subaru family. During summer Holiday-weekends my driveway looks like a SooBee car lot. Son-in-law operates a Subaru-only repair shop, so the Outback puuurrs like a kitten

For what you describe (I live 'rural' as well); I hardily reccomend a discreetly mounted Valentine-1. OSP uses same-direction K-band rolling up from behind. I am SO greatful everytime I get that trailing, level 1-2, K-band squak. Gently changing lanes and being patient, it might take 5 minutes for ol' Smokey to pass. OSP and various counties still use X-band.

Driving on the Interstate WILL involve encounters with LIDAR. I am happy with my Blinder performance, but Blinder is the scope of my experience so I can't comment on other units.
