Unhappy 08 Pro 78 Speaker Out

He fellow forum members. I received my Pro 78 as a gift from my daughter. I really like this detector. However upon turning it on today it make a crackling sound and the speaker now sounds like crap. All else works fine...just whenever I get a alert it rattles & sounds really bad. I've asked my daughter if she still has receipt so I can see where she purchased it from so I can check on warranty...No such luck. Any suggestions? I really like my pro 78. I thought it was of a better quality. I guess mine is a lemon.

Its the speaker manufacturers in China. All of the RD manufacturers have had problems with speakers. The Pro78's speaker was designed to be easy to replace. Its pretty much a no brainer. Open the Pro78's case, unplug the speaker and then remove the screw and tiny clip which holds the speaker in place. Remove the old speaker, put in the new speaker re-install the clip and screw, plug in the speaker and close up the RD case. When installing the Pro78's case screws, try to thread them in so that they thread into the threads which were cut by them when they were initially installed at the factory. Also, only tighten the screws so that they are snug but not very tight since the case screws are threaded into plastic posts rather than metal. Here is a picture of the Pro78's speaker:

All you need is a set of small Phillips head screwdrivers for opening the RD case and changing the speaker. I'm sure that Mike B and Whistler will get you squared away.

The Japanese used to manufacture really high quality miniature speakers. But now all production has moved to China and the quality control has plummeted. It kind of makes you wonder just how reliable those speaker alarms are in various types of hospital medical equipment.

Thanks you guys for all your help. Michael B. is the greatest. He really came through for me. I will buy whistler again simply because it's a great radar detector but also because of the great consumer service...after the sale. MB made the difference.

MEM-TEK, Your diagram of the inside of the Pro 78 makes it simple...even for me to install Thanks Dude!
