Here we have commercial plates on pick-up trucks so you can haul stuff around. If caught haulling with regular plates (on your truck which you can request) is not good.

Do I need an STI? Will I get in worse trouble if detected?

9 out of 10 times the RD restriction is weight based.

Federal is one weight ( I think 25,000lbs but I'm not 100% sure) and some states have it lower than that.

The numbers are pretty high up most of the time

I don't know what kind of truck or what you're hauling so I can't really elaborate beyond that.
