Hi gang,
I found this place because i got a ticket today in a speed trap and its the second one. the guy was parked 20 yards in FRONT of the speed limit sign 54 in a 40 on US highway 36 in Indiana. those northern cops are tough! I moved here two yrs ago from down south because of my job and racing.

I live in Indy but travel Illinois, Mich. Indiana and top part of kentucky in my company truck. I dont normally speed, I try to keep it less than 5 mph over but this is my second one in a year and b4 that it has been 15 years since my last ticket. I have no need to speed I race so I get my jollies there.

I just want to find out what the best Radar detector is on the market to cover everywhere I go. Money isnt a huge issue but I dont want to throw it away on something I dont need.

BTW if you're ever in Indy holler at me we're usually at the track on weekends.

Radar Detector only helps protect you from radar. If laser is a threat, you have to have a laser jammer. Detectors do nothing to protect you from laser.

If you do mostly highway driving then the V1, 9500ix if mostly city and you want quiet.

This will only provide protection from radar, laser will still get you before you can slow.

For protection from laser you will need a laser jammer.

A CB is a good choice too if you are on the highway a lot.

thanks, ive been readin the forum since I know zilch about radar it's been a learning experience.
I cant mount a CB as it is a company vehicle. I travel mostly intersate but even more so US highways and back roads. The speed traps I see are county guys and small town cops on the WAY out fringes of their townships. Yes they are looking for revenue.... grasping.

i have no clue if they use radar or not but I would think that doesnt matter since you say they have you anyway if they use radar.

guys I can tell you all about blown alcohol racing but this is all new to me.

I am tempted just to order the Valentine based on what I've been reading, but then part of me wants to just find an ESCORT 8500? on ebay and try that for a while.
Its not really a money issue but do I need a V1 if I cant do anything about the laser anyway???

I cant afford another ticket. already have points and my employer hates when we get tickets. Job is not in danger but i hate ass chewings..

I dont think I can use the laser jammer or whatever that is if It has to mount somewhere. This is exclusively my company truck but the less stuff I have on it the less stuff I have to deal with taking off every other year.

Back roads it is probably radar. If you see them sitting at 90 degree angles to the road or standing outside the car it's probably laser if not it's radar most likely.

Can you give us a better description of your encounter with the speedtrap? Did you get a laser or radar alert on your 8500? If it was the LEO was using laser, I recommend you keep the 8500 and use the $400 on a laser jammer rather than a V1.

sorry if I was unclear. I dont have ANY type radar detector.

I dont think I can use a jammer since it has to be mounted and I travel Illinois where it is illegal. so if I got caught with it, ( not as easy to throw under the seat as a RD ) My employer would take a much dimmer view of me trying to jam radar...

Parallel to the road ( US highway 36 just outside Indy ) and he was seated in his vehicle.

A jammer doesn't have to be permanently hard mounted with bolts or anything. But it isn't instantly removable either. Takes a couple hours to wire it and mount it. But if you don't have to take it in and out daily, as in a take-home car, then there's no reason you can't put one in there without leaving holes or anything.

If that's not doable for you, and if you're not a habitual hyperspeeder, then you can still at least hedge your bets against radar for those times when you get distracted and run over the limit.

People who drive with the wife and family a lot, who aren't particularly into the technology of countermeasures, tend to prefer the detector that does all their thinking for them and stays relatively quiet and non-distracting. That's the Escort 9500ix.

Those who are serious about the technology and the best possible protection prefer the Valentine 1 because it does not filter out signals, and offers maximum situational awareness so you can best judge your threats.

The Escort is $500. The Valentine 1 is $400. If money is not an issue, then those are really the only two serious choices. There would be little or no reason to look at anything else.
