help with 8500 x50 with zr3????

just bought an 8500 x50 that came with the 3 external zr3 shifters... this is all new to me, im getting the hang of it pretty quickly though. had a quick question though... although i am completely fine with understanding the radar warnings, i am confused on what to expect in terms of the laser shifting. last night, i was driving about 55 in a 35 and came around a corner to a straight shot of road and then all of a suddenly i got a solid, blasting tone signifying "k" band and the stength meter was completely solid as well. was this it telling me i was shot with laser? and if thats the case, doesnt it typically notify you with a message such as "F laser shifter" if the front end was shot with laser? or was this just an instant-on radar source, not laser at all? as i got closer, i eventually saw where he was hiding but he just flashed his headlights on then off when i passed and didnt pull me over... then when i got probably about 75 yards away in front of him, i got another blast of the "k" band, same solid tone and solid strength meter immediately,this time he was behind me, again no "R laser shifter" or anything appeared on my passport. letting my curiosity get the best of me, i drove down the road around another corner, turned around and continued back towards him. as soon as i rounded the corner where i knew where he was and saw the front of his car, i got the same solid blast of "k" band as the previous two times, same solid tone and strength meter. what is this telling me? and if it is laser, why are my shifters not picking this up and doing their job?! ( i checked to make sure shifter zr3 mode was activated on the passport) any insight would be great! thank you in advance.

I don't know a lot about laser yet but what you describe to me sounds like radar and not laser.

K band is radar, which no laser jammer is going to jam. He flashed his lights to make you slow down and probably just wasn't feeling like writing any tickets. You got lucky.

okay, so why didnt the detector pick up the k band until i was within 50 yards or so the first time around if it was just radar, and why did it come so strong and immediatly all three times? it did not give me warning in advance from a distance and build up, the warning just went crazy. is this an instant-on radar or something?

Yes, this is instant-on, which is exactly what it sonds like. The LEO hides in a sneaky place and keeps his radar off until he finds a juicy target, then switches it on. No RD can detect radar when there is none to detect.

The only defense from instant on is if you have a rabbit (car in front of you) that the officer hits first with a blast of radar. You then get the warning and slow down and when it's your turn you have already slowed. Also paying close attention to your environment helps alot, if a officer is using I/O he has to see you, which means there is a chance you can see him first and reduce your speed before he hits the button. And if you travel the interstates alot a decent CB radio helps, the truckers are pretty good about calling out bears and giving you some advanced notice of their location.
