    Default NorCal 330

    Hey folks.

Long time speeder here who has been far too long without a radar detector. I used to have a V1 that I loved, but it was stolen. It was hard to pull the trigger on another radar detector purchase after that.

I have long since changed from a SUV to my 3 series coupe, and although I have been very lucky not to have a speeding ticket in the past two years, it is definitely time I got myself some insurance.

I have begun to do some research and have noticed they now have GPS powered speed trap and red light camera detectors, undetectable detectors, detectors you can mount in several places on your car, issues with windshields I didn't know existed... it all is a bit overwhelming.

I'm looking to spend a fair amount of cheddar for a detector that will serve me well in my bimmer. I saw a cheap-o whistler for sale on woot.com but someone commented that I should come here first.

    Cheers,

    Hoodis

Welcome to the forum. I assume you have an E46.

I have the V1 for three years already and I find it to the best window detector out there.

The V1 is an excellent detector, but is not the best choice for the Bay Area in my opinion. The K band traffic drones up there are awful and there is not much I/O, so I think a 9500ix is a better choice. What you'll miss is the arrows of the V1, so if the arrows outweigh all of the other stuff, then get another V1 and we'll help you program it so that the traffic drones don't drive you bananas. That and you're going to need a laser jammer.

i don't remember the arrows being particularly useful, and the 9500ix has GPS. That would probably be my first choice.

Lazer jammers I don't know much about; I need something like two-four boxes installed on the corners of my car, if I understand correctly.

Could I install my escort without wires dangling, get a lazer jammer, and still stay under $1000?

You could protect the front of your car against laser with a Blinder M27 and hardwire the 9500ix for about $1000, assuming you are capable of installing the Blinders yourself.
