    Default Hello from Illinois

    Hey all,

I'm new to the forum and don't know alot about radar. Paid a couple of tickets here in the last several months and looking for a way to prevent that in the future.

Learned lots so far from this forum. I just wish I would have landed here sooner!

Yes, I own an old Whistler 1580 that has a dead speaker. I had tossed it in a box in the garage and hadn't used it in a while. I recently bought a Cobra at WalMart. After getting a couple of tickets. Wow! What a mistake! Good thing WalMart has a decent return policy. I would love to have a V1 but the wife is out of work and the funds are low for a while. Unfortunately fixing the Whistler looks like my only option for now.

    Welcome from another Illinois resident!

Be cautious of the V1 zombies here. I don't know about your region, but in Southern Illinois, 99% of the Ka-Band radar i've seen on the interstate is 35.5GHz, which is the one frequency where the V1 is a total dud. Been there, done that.

If you're tight on funds, check out either a refurbished Escort 8500 for $150, or a Bel Vector 955 for slightly more from Radarbusters.

No matter what, enjoy your stay here!

Thanks for the info about the V1. I have noticed the V1 fanboys. Thats really surprising about that kind of performance for such a premium priced RD.

I've noticed more and more IL State troopers sitting on the bridges shooting laser guns in So. IL and setting up speed traps with 4-5 other officers hanging out on the back side of the ramps. Got any tips for keeping these guys in check?

Welcome a Jammers are a must if you are running into this much lidar What part of IL do you normally drive? I drive from the north to near chicago and all the LEO's I have seen sit in the middle and you can see the brake lights for a mile Also I had a 955 and a great detector!

I would definitely go with the refurb 8500. It comes with everything you need, plus a 6 month warranty.

The V1 is an excellent choice for a RD and a LI would be an excellent choice for a LJ.

As the others have said - laser jammers. Also, I've found the CB to be quite effective in the southern Illinois area as well. If you don't mind my asking, what part of Illinois are you from?
