    Default Hello from Atlanta, GA

Hello all! I've been lurking here for a few months. There's a lot to read here!

For years I assumed my first detector would be a V1, but
I recently got in on the Amazon deal for the 9500ix for $375. Given that I mostly drive in the city I'm thinking the GPS lockout will be helpful. I haven't opened the box yet, though. If I decide on the V1, I can always resell the 9500 for a small profit.

Two days ago a guy BEHIND me got a speeding ticket. That's when you know you're a good driver.

Welcome, in the Metro ATL area a RD is not much help. Laser is the biggest threat and a RD is just about useless against that threat.

Interesting. I've read similar comments. What about city streets vs. highway in Atlanta? Are they both equally dominated by laser?

I've never gotten a speeding ticket in 20 years. I drive fast but stay within reasonable range of the PSL and traffic flow and try to use rabbits, plus I have a very plain car. I did a few road trips through GA and FL. I went through about a dozen speed traps on the open road where the PSL was 70 and I was going 83-ish. The LEO never budged on any of them.

Mostly I wanted a toy to entertain me. Should I perhaps instead buy one of the detectors that you guys ridicule, like a cheap Cobra, and play with that for a while?

Locals in GA must give you at least 11 before they can issue a citation, so 13 over is probably not in their zone. Most won't go after you until 16 over as there are no points for anything 14 over and under. The ix is a great detector for a metro area, there is some radar, just more lidar due to the traffic congestion.

Now once you get out of GA they can pop you for whatever they want, but most places give 9 to 10 at a minimum (NC and VA are not most places).

Nah, you made a good choice, generally speaking. It will give you plenty to play with and learn from, and it won't drive you crazy once you get the false alerts in your regular driving area locked out. That takes awhile though, so to start off with, it will be as noisy as just about any other detector.

Just don't get overconfident with it. The 9500 has its shortcomings, and laser would be your biggest threat, and that takes a jammer to beat.

I live in the metro area, and really like my 9500ix. But like everyone else says I see laser everywhere. I do see a little bit of radar in the Duluth and John's Creek area's. After you get outside of the city they use radar alot more. The 9500ix is a fun RD to play with it has alot of settings, one thing that comes in handy is the ability to mark your own speedtraps. My wife's car does not have jammers and whenever I see a cop running a laser/radar speedtrap, I mark it and when I come back through it reminds me to be careful.

Nah! Madmen can't even keep up with us. We are the fast and the furious. You could write a book on all the things you see on the roads around Atlanta. My wife recently saw a car spin out, hit a car, then land on a guard rail in the middle of the highway. The car was perfectly balanced on top of the guard rail rocking back and forth with the driver behind the wheel. All of the wheels were off the ground. Ta-Da! Amazing!
