I've never defended myself, but three times now I hired a lawyer and was able to get speeding tickets reduced or converted to something with no points without having to go before the judge. My thinking was that having a lawyer at the first hearing (not as an act of desperation for an appeal), dressing nice, carrying what looked like a stack of papers in my folder, etc, would communicate that I was serious and it would be less trouble to make a deal. I wonder if that was overkill.
$500 the first time, then $300 from the same lawyer. I hadn't even gone to trial for the first one yet, so I got a discount for being a frequent customer... lol... Second lawyer for the last ticket was $300.
I've heard of $50 lawyers in other places but I find it hard to believe. They aren't cheap around here, but they still cost a lot less than the insurance company finding out or having to take the bus.

Ouch :s
I dunno, being that it's PA your side of the state could work totally different from my side but I'd say about 60 percent of people contest their speeding citations and the majority represent themselves...it's rare that they actually have to fight their case, they're normally just told that they can plead to 5 over (which incurs no points and a fine of about $125) before the hearing even starts. If they say no then they actually have the opportunity to work through their case. That's true for at least half a dozen district judge offices around here, but it's probably like that at all of them.
Like I said before that's just for citations from municipal police, radar/PSP speeding cases may work differently.
Sorry it took so long to reply.I guess I should read my threads! He he he.If I can find his card I will pm you with his name and address. This guy is good, but it will cost you.$750 and the ticket.Whatever he gets it reduced too.The ticket was for 72 in a 55 upstate NY near tarrytown.I got him through a friend because of the points and ins charge. He knows ALOT of judges and works in NY,NJ & PA.If not I'll bet he knows a good one for PA.At the time I lived in NY and could not afford anymore points!
Thought I'd "ditto" in this thread to satisfy the admin reqs, but I am with you on what is said. One other tool I have found indispensible is pre-paid legal. Fax over the citation and let a lawyer handle court dates for only $15.0/mo. - PRICELESS
