Default Long time reader, first time poster.

Just wanted to say hello. Looking at getting a new detector as I haven't used one for some time. Last one I had was a Bel 645i (I think). The technology is night and day since then, so it's time to update! I live in Alberta, Canada, and i/o ka and laser are mostly what are used here. I have a LEO background (don't hate me), so obviously know the tricks of the trade, and do know how many people using detectors don't get caught compared to those that don't use detectors. Spend lot's of time on the highway during the summer with the family, so obviously don't want to be the next victim. Anyway, starting to narrow down my possibilities, so I'll post requesting opinions on the top 3. Looking forward to your opinions!

Welcome, lots to learn on the forum as you probably know. I think I recall Canada being tough on countermeasures so am assuming you will be looking at the stealth options, so guess it depends on how much you want to spend !! You will need laser jammer as well and can recommend Laser Interceptor. Maybe you could look at one of the package deals (think they still have them) LI + Redline ......

    Welcome to the forum.
Since you live in Canada I would recommend the Redline due to it's stealth capabilites. LI for laser. Read up before you buy.
    Good luck.

Thanks guys. Detectors are legal here, so stealth isn't an issue. Most concerned about ka and laser. Biggest wish is for solid ka sensitivity with very minimal annoying falses. Narrowed it down to a Whistler SE based model (3600 or 695se) or maybe a Bel 995. Price for those seems reasonable for me, maybe vs a Bel sti driver or Redline.

Welcome! Just remember that you always get what you pay for, especially with technology. If I/O Ka is one of the most common threats in your area, having the absolute maximum range cannot be overly emphasized if you want to stand a chance against it. I know that this video is a little (ok, VERY) corny and is obviously trying to push the Escort product, but it was the first one that came to mind that shows how important range can be:

If you're willing to spend $299 on the Bel 995 but don't feel like going all the way up to the Redline at $499, which is definitely understandable, I would find the middle ground with the V1 at $399. This way you'll get the ultimate in responsiveness to I/O & Q/T, superior range to the 995, and the bonuses of the arrows & bogey counter.

You mentioned you want minimal falses. The only way to fully achieve that would be to go with a GPS-powered unit like the 9500ix. Now, I know that the V1 gets a bad reputation for falsing a lot, but as long as its safe in your area and you can shut off X-band, POP, & take advantage of its Auto-Mute feature, it can be quieter than many detectors on the market.

Check these out for some performance numbers:

Also, like everyone else said, you'll need jammers if laser is a threat, but I'd say get yourself a solid radar detector before you do anything else.

If RD's are legal in your area and IO/QT is used alot I would strongly consider the V1 as a window unit. It is a very responsive unit and gives good situational awareness. It also has a good concealed display.
