The RS232 port is the one commonly used for external modems. Not many modern PC's have them anymore as the modem is built in and a telephone jack has replaced the RS232 port.
There are USB to RS232 converter cables, but you need to make sure the one you get has a FTDI chip inside otherwise it won't work. Another problem is that RS232 connectors and ports come in two flavors (DB 25 or DB 9 (for the number of pins and the shape)), plus some cables are configured straight through, some are null modems, some don't connect all the pins, etc. etc..
Again - you cannot upgrade the firmware even with an RS232 port and the proper cable/connectors - with the proper L.I. software you could only change certain optional settings that are already in the firmware. to change the firmware you have to send it back.
Cliff said they have talked about making them so a user can flash them but that would be in the future.
