That style of drill bit is called a "Uni-bit".
Thanks Swamp, my brother who I borrowed it from wasn't sure if it was uni-step or uni-bit...so I'll go with bit.
The bit was perfect for boring a hole through plastic for anyone looking to install the switch but apparently it was a little pricey, 50-60$ if my brother had his numbers right.
Uni-bit or step drill bit. Mine cost about $40 I think, but it's the only way to make holes in thin materials. Regular bits just make the hole halfway and proceed to screw themselves in, instead of uniformly cutting out the hole.
I was at the local Harbor Freight Tools a couple of days ago and I noticed that the regular price for a set of three uni-bit drills is $14.95. Each bit is diferent from the other two.
Harbor Freight is a good place to buy some tools but some of them are made a bit too cheaply for me. The drill bits I have bought there are all adequate for me and I'm pleased with them. Houston has three locations......not so sure about other cities.
Wish I saw this thread earlier... I could have told you exactly what needed to be done... I had the same issue with an egregious amount of bracing on a useless little panel in my little Honda Civic (though an older model).
I went to my local pick-n-pull (Junk-yard where you go in and pull whatever parts you need yourself)... and for a $1 entry fee (If I remember correctly) I got a ton of little panels to do work on... so I could keep the original ones safe and sound:
