    Default Finally...First Laser Encounter Today

I've had my LI Dual installed since March or so and until this morning had yet to see any LIDAR in use. Coincidentally, I just finished installing a 9500ci a couple of weeks ago. So I decided to head in to work this morning to play a little catch up. As I was headed eastbound along a 4 lane divided highway I started to get a faint spike of Ka. I was running in Expert so didn't catch the frequency. As I continued east the spike got more intense until I eventually saw two LEOs parked nose to tail in the westbound lane, both facing west. As I passed them I saw one of the LEO's outside his car, kneeling down with what I assumed was a lidar gun. At about that time the westernmost LEO got in his car to chase down a speeder. By this time I was right at the PSL.

Despite my better judgement I really wanted to see if I could get hit with laser so I moved down the road a mile or so then turned around. Really strong Ka spike now (can't believe I forgot to switch to Spec mode) as I continued west towards the trap at the PSL (with the flow of right lane traffic). Just as the car in front unobscured the LEO still kneeling down, the LI siren started going off. Not wanting to be a jack***, I immediately killed the LI and continued westbound until I could turn around again.

My one regret (besides not noting the Ka freq) was killing the jammer before I heard what type of gun was in use. Oh well, next time. Now if only I could have pulled over and asked the LEO how the jammer worked... just kidding. I have yet to get them tested.

No need to jam longer than you have to. You'll get hit again and maybe then you will not expect it so you'll get to hear the voice alert. You did the right thing immediately killing. No reason to draw unwanted attention to yourself.

Agree here, LASER is the future for the most part IMO so you will have ample opportunity to be "hit" again here in your immediate future. I use mine more for travel outside my home/work/play routes than inside the work/play/home areas.

How come more cops don't use I/O radar? It seems that is the ultimate threat, and we don't really have any countermeasures to that. You think with laser being able to be jammed, they would use I/O radar more and more, and eventually standardize that...

I'm not saying allot of LEO's don't use Instand ON (IO) but, W/RADAR it depends on your Location because due to it's wide wave it can be detected allot/very easily compared to LIDAR. Also when you are IO w/RADAR our LEO friends kinda 'tell the world' "hey, here I am" for all us RD users (with in a certain proximity of course) and makes it fairly easy to detect for us to pick up and get the alert. RADAR is most usefull for medium to low traffic population IMO also. For the Crowded cities (medium heavy to heavy population) LIDAR is the instrument of choice due to it being able to single out a single Car in a group due to it's narrow beam and you would be very lucky to pick up LASER scatter unless you are extremly close to the target vehicle.

Now there is allot of discussion about Quick Trigger (QT) and that's different animal compared to IO. QT is discussed in depth here on our site and others, search the forums and google it for more info.

You also got to remember while yes LIDAR is jamable most of the US population doesn't use it, I think we came up w/<1 percent (just take a look around all the cars you see, how many LJ's do you see?)

Congrats on the first encounter. I would have let it go to hear what gun it was.

The thing with LIDAR is they can scan car after car with little detection. With I/O, you get one car, but blast your presence to anyone downstream with a detector. I/O is only deadly in rural or little traffic. Only very selective I/O works, but they have to skip a bunch of cars in between. LIDAR spoils them because they don't even need to bother estimating speed. I've seen CHP and others (Oregon) use LIDAR by just shooting every car in the fast lane.

The flip side of that, I/O - I was driving through Nevada in the desert, and this NHP trooper is shooting I/O ahead of me. I caught it like 6 cars ahead of me (1 1/2 miles away), each of us spaced 1/4 mile apart. Not very deadly, unless you had a 100 yard detection Cobra.

The other thing is - the average traffic cop will encounter maybe 1 jammer every few months. Not exactly something to go out of the way for at this point. If I were a cop doing speed control, I'd be using LIDAR.
