Default My 1st real "close encounter" - very impressed with LI!

SO, I had to drive ~600 miles in the last 2 days and the LI was quiet for the entire trip except one for very impressive little incident earlier this evening.

But I want to state up front that I'm not sure whether this can really be called a save or not - you can be the judge.

So I am in a long straight rolling stretch of freeway with a lot of other cars around me and I am (of course) in the fast lane as usual doing around 80 (or just slightly under). It is a 65 zone and it is early evening with the light just starting to dim but still mostly daylight.

However on the other side of the freeway there are already lots of headlights shining right at me again.

I am fairly close behind another guy who like me is a fellow speed demon. All of a sudden I hear the LI give an alert and this time she says TRACY - ERR or something like that (if I do have a complaint about my LI unit it is that the ladies voice/speaker is not really clear - at least not to my ears. Is she Croatian or something?).

Anyway, I casually slow down and I hit the kill switch thinking to myself that it was probably the headlights on the other side of the freeway causing a false alarm just like last time. In slowing down I also force a few cars behind me to slow down (may have saved their b*tts too).

So I'm now doing around 65 thinking that there is no way that any LEO could have squeezed a laser beam between all this traffic and that it has to be just another silly false alarm when all of a sudden after 1/4-1/2 mile there is Mr. LEO sitting on the margin with his window open brandishing his phaser weapon.

Wow! I am VERY impressed with my LI unit if only for the warning! My Redline radar detector (which it has to be said detected many Ka radar traps elsewhere on this same trip) was silent this whole time.

I went another mile or two and turned on the LI again. I was grinning from ear to ear!

Of course I have no way of knowing whether I jammed his gun or not but he didn't come after me.

Based on past experience I think that I was probably borderline for a ticket. So who knows! But based on that warning I strongly suspect that this thing really works. Thank you Cliff!

So, I've been trying to figure out what "she" said.... my best bet: Traffipatrol XR.

Are they used here in USA?

I would call that one a save. 15 over is a ticket in most places, and you didn't get one. Nice job on the JTK!

Also, my Redline never alerts when my jammers go off. I finally just turned off laser on the Redline. Jammers do that job better anyway.

Where was this (what state or province?) It might help us narrow down what gun it was.

The most common guns in the USA are the PL3 ("Kustom Pro 3 or Pro Lite"), Ultralyte ("Marksman or Ultralyte 20-20"), Truspeed ("Truspeed or TruCam"), and Laser Atlanta ("Laser Atlanta or Kustom Pro 2"). The Traffipatrol XR isn't used in the USA, but sometimes the LI can false this gun on an Infiniti LCC system. If the LI did alert on Traffipatrol XR perhaps it did false on an Infiniti and the LEO never shot you, and was just a coincidence.

Could you make out the shape/color/markings on the gun when you went by him?

I had the same problem the only time I got shot so far with my LI. It was noisy in the car, with music playing, my wife on her cell phone, and when I got shot my V1 and Redline were screaming and I couldn't make out what the LI said shot me.

If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

    External speaker FTW!

It's a necessity for the LI if you want to know what gun they were using, or like you music loud.

I think it's possible that your LIs detected and alerted to an Infiniti with laser cruise control as "TraffiPatrol XR" and the LEO shooting a real laser gun shortly thereafter, was a coincidence. The LIs do an excellent job at filtering out false alerts, but the one that slips by most often is a TraffiPatrol XR alert from an Infiniti.

    I'd call it a save
I'm pretty sure it was the LEO, I had those driving conditions a LOT on the drive and I just don't believe in coincidences like that particular one. I mean the correct distance and everything else and there he was - parked sideways with the window open. And, in an area where people always speed because of the very wide straight open road and where the LEO's always like to prey on them.

I didn't get a clear look at any gun although I do think that he appeared to be holding something and my brain filled in the blanks.

So, Traffic Observer sounds like a likely candidate - I do really think that there was an "ERR" sound at the end of what she said but yes I had music on and it took me a second to tune in my ears to her announcement and also I was a little bit into panic mode.

Why don't the software guys for this device add a feature to record the last few detects? That would be a very nice to have. Also, I'd like a more obvious flashing LED perhaps on the unit itself or on a separate dashboard mountable module (my switch is tucked away).

Does connecting an external speaker make a big difference?

I think that this is not HiFi sound quality even sitting still - the "parking aid deactivated" message even sounds quite scratchy and distorted to me.

I think that I am going to try adding an external speaker.

If you have some spare money kicking around connect the LI to your car deck and hook up the mute wire. I listen to music a lot while driving, thus I connected my mute wire to the stereo. So every time I get hit with laser my music auto-mutes and then plays the alert.
