    ^ +1 on wiring/electrical....

Are his new speakers drawing so much juice that the ZR3's seeing insufficient supply?

    That would be my guess.

The BL/BP chassis Subaru Legacy - what I drive - is known to produce a funny voltage drop at rather unpredictable times when going WOT from off-boost, especially in the lower gears, and I do get this rear ZR3 related falsing from time to time.

Any way to check supply voltage while his speakers are thumping?

Yeah, I check with the 8500 in V mode, and 11.85V on thump and upto 13.9 no thump. and it fluctuates.

^ I'm not sure that the 11.85 would be low enough to trip....might be worth it for your friend to give Escort and a call and see what they say.

Looks like his battery is going into active discharge, though!

Better let him know not to thump around town too, too much.

It could also be a possible kink in the wire... I had this issue with my ZR3 once....

^ I'll have to double-check my rear install, thanks for the tip/hint.

This may potentially be an issue with me, too, as my current rear install is somewhat "ghetto rigged" since Subaru provided me with no ready outlet for the rear.

I can see how the extra G-forces from a straight-line punch could cause a temporary kink situation.

    Thanks again for that tip!

it was!!! So far so good guys, I checked the install and his wire goes under the license plate and is pulled like 270 degrees around the sharp edge... I had to re run the wire around the license plate light... its clean, and works!
Go figure a kink in the wire.

    Thanks for all your help!

Great news guys... the kink i had was so bad, i had to cut a length of wire then rejoin them...

Seems like escort's cables are not kink resistant... the wires inside are pretty thin.
