Default Laser range decreases with headlights on?

I used the search function to try to find this but there are too many non-related hits for laser and headlights on here.

My question is this: Has anyone tested to see if the range of a laser gun is decreased with headlights on versus off?

Secondly, could infrared filters be placed over a car's foglamps to give a useful reduction in laser gun range?

I understand that laser guns use a pulsed beam that is much more intense than an ordinary light bulb, but I'm trying to determine if you can overwhelm the optical sensor with enough unpulsed visible/IR light to provide a meaningful delay in the gun locking onto your car from a distance.

    Thanks.

Car & Driver did a test way back in 1993, in which they saw some reductions in target distance when the test vehicle had it's high beams on. This was against the first two laser guns on the market: the Kustom ProLaser I and the LTI 20-20.

I think the general consensus is that it will have little effect on today's laser guns, but I guess every little bit helps...

Trying to "overwhelm the optical sensor" isn't practical, any attempts won't have much of an effect if any at all. In fact, NO jammers use this technique.

Thanks for the response. I was remembering a camouflage technique used during WWII called "Yahoody" ( or Yehudi, or Yahoody the Invincible). You can read about it here: http://www.mnq-nmq.org/english/vivez...s/camoufla.htm.

The Yehudi principle was to attach diffused lighting to ships or airplanes to disguise their approach in the background ambient light. For instance, a plane would have the lights attached to their forward wing surfaces so they could approach submarines for attack and not give off the tell-tale sillouette in the sun. Of course this was against visual observation and not automated sensing and was useless against radar.

Anyway, I own a number of lasers but nothing in the IR range. I was hoping it would be possible to have enough light coming from the highly reflective headlamp area that pointing the laser at this target area would reduce the range if the lights are on. I don't own a laser gun to try this out, perhaps it can be put on the GOL testing list the next time they head out to the field.

Thanks also to the second poster. It makes sense that there is a filter at the receiver to reject interfering light.

OK, we'll definitely try this out in the future, probably this summer. Since this question has been asked before, perhaps we'll get some hard data to refer people to.
