Default Mounting jammer heads behind windshields or screens?

The question is bound to come up again and because the last thread that had anything to do with this topic was closed, I figured I'd retouch on the subject. It is not recommended that the heads be obstructed by anything. Not glass (tinted or clear), not plastic (tinted or clear), not mesh, not anything. But will it still work? It has worked for a member of this forum who rides his motorcycle regularly and on trips that can amount to hundreds of miles at a time. Please visit the link below for further explanation. Some Mods seem to want the "tested" truth hidden or forgotten. Let's hope that this is never the case.

Don't believe it works really and here is why?

Most laser guns for the best performance require the laser gun to not be operated shooting through glass on the car. And police laser guns use a powerful focused laser diode.

LEDs in jammer heads are far less powerful and not that focused.

Laser diode heads while they may be just as powerful as a laser gun diode they are not as focused.

I remember him posting his observations in another thread and you are indeed very correct.

The variable in the test you cite is significant. That variable is that it was a motorcycle, and not a car. An officer targeting a bike will hit the windshield. An officer targeting a car or truck will not. So doing this on a car is absolutely out of the question.

On a motorcycle, the effectiveness of the head is cut at least in half. In my tests with a Laser Mask behind a bike windshield, it did nothing. The test you cite is not a system behind a windshield. It is an extra head behind a windshield. It takes very little to augment a system that already has external heads. Veil would do that, and probably just as well.

As I said in the thread you cite, I'd love to see someone make it work. And it's not exactly rocket surgery, so I have hope that someone might do so. But until then, I'm not going to blow smoke and false hope up people's arses with speculation that it *might help a little* under just the right circumstances. That's as good as a "no" to me.

On the Vette? Windshield? At the dash, or up behind the tint strip?

How about a Smart Car aka "Dumb for Two??" An officer targeting a car will not hit the windshield???? So what are you saying, my windshield mounted radar detector is useless?? Seems to work every time to me. Point is, there is no variable here. Here is the "Original" quote from your FaQs thread:
    10. Can I mount my jammer behind the windshield?
No. Not behind glass. Not behind plexiglass. Not behind Lexan. Many have tried. All have failed. A system behind glass simply will not work. Don’t waste your time.
I assumed you were referring to a motor vehicle of some sort. A motorcycle isn't a variable, it's a motor vehicle. All have failed huh? Umm Ok...

Tell me you're not serious?!? Grabbing for straws are we!! Laser Mask... Veil. VEil.. VeIL.. You know I don't support the gimmick known as Veil, an item that belongs on women, so please don't insult me like that. The difference for that member who equipped his motorcycle with an extra head behind the windscreen was "SiGniFicant!!!!"

Well again you're correct, it's not rocket science or surgery. It worked in one case and it's been witnessed by more than a few. For your own safety as well as others, I would also hope that you would never blow anything up anyones @ss. THe problem still stands though, the head behind a windshield helped significantly but you continue to say it does nothing. See new quote below for reference:
    10. Can I mount my jammer behind the windshield?
No. Not behind glass. Not behind plexiglass. Not behind Lexan. Many have tried. All have failed. Glass reduces performance of a head by about 80 percent. A system behind glass simply will not work. Don’t waste your time.
Many have tried? Really? Thought only a handful or so attempted it or am I mistaken?
All have failed? Really? I grow tired of explaining so again reference the link in the first post.
Glass reduces the performance of the head by 80%??? Whtf did that number come from..., Space??? What type of glass are we talking about because you left that pretty vague. Maybe you're still referring to a windshield? I'm going to stop there.

Unfortunately, that was expected. I'm sure you've since optimized your setup though.

I swear the CT trooper shooting the TruSpeed against my car recently was shotting at my windshield as my v995 is far from the best laser detector and mounted up by my rear view alerted the whole time until i flipped the jammer off

Some enforcers do shoot at the windscreen/windshield - of an AUTOMOBILE.

Lurk some of the LEO Forums, you'll see evidence of this, easily.

Since these individuals are able to still consistently write tickets this way, they've never been prompted to do otherwise.

    ----

    My thoughts on this topic?

We've seen plenty of evidence from within this community, itself, to say that it's not something that should be done - placing the jammer head behind *any* type of covering material. At least not any material known to us or have been examined by us, to-date.

We've seen first-hand reports of police LIDAR used in the above manner, through various vehicle's windshields and other greenhouse glass, to return with delayed "lock" and/or reduced range.

We've seen first-hand reports of the use of various jammers behind a vehicle's front windshield and rear windscreen to produce either somewhat or even significantly reduced performance or to render the unit nearly useless - and this spans both LED as well as laser-diode (aka "CLED," in MEM-TEK terminology) jammers, from the Escort ZR3 to the Laser Interceptor.

Yet, at the same time, there have also been reports in the community that although effectiveness may be decreased, that still at least *some* measure of protection is conferred.

To me, I think, if I were to give advice, I'd say that any *primar* jammer heads should not be obstructed - at all - period.

It's just a handicap that should not be, it's a detriment that, with proper foresight and perhaps a bit of inventiveness, during install, that should be able to be avoided, no matter what the vehicle's aesthetics/setup.

However, that if the jammer user wants to incorporate supplemental protection - i.e. for the roofline of a van or other tall-ratio vehicle - it may be viable, particularly when combined with a "powerful" jammer, to effect more protection where there might have been a "hole," without. [ IIRC, LLP used just such a setup on his Mercedes 330i van, to effect coverage of his roofline, where he could not, before. ]
