    Default Custom HID ballast...

How much infrared light does a HID headlight put out? I remember reading somewhere that some HIDs could potentially jam laser... I'm considering upgrading the lights on my car to HIDs, and I'm wondering if developing a custom ballast that operates the lights at the same frequency that a brute-force jammer would use, would have any effect on police lidar. If it works, then it would be the perfect excuse to have a jammer in places where they are banned as well, they can search all over your car and find nothing.

I have thought about something similar. Wouldn't it be nice to tell an officer who pulled you over for a jamming code to find nothing when he searched?

My idea was go get LED headlights and taillights, then mount the small transmitters and receivers between the small led parts... in such a way that they would never be noticed and could never be seen. I'm sure if someone had enough money, the right equipment, and the right technology, they could do anything.

Dissect a laser jammer head and see what one looks like. Brainstorm on different hiding places for the LEDs/Diodes of jammers. You could be super sneaky. So could we all... but at what cost? With what equipment?

Brute force won't work on most guns today, as they will reject the foreign pulses. HIDs honestly will have little (at best) to no effect on jamming.

Yep, I had 4600K HID projectors in my car (stock) and got hit by laser going 86 in a 65. Had no effect what so ever.

I now have 6000K HID Projectors and 8000K Driving lights...they do set off my jammer when they reflect off of stuff, but I doubt they will jam a gun.

don't forget, i'm pretty sure that swapping out headlights for ANY aftermarket HID system is illegal in most states. most boxes say "for off-road use only" for that reason

so you may be setting yourself up for a different ticket

HID aren't going to jam a gun themselves but they may help a jammer

Absolutely. Not to mention that the housings for the two different types of headlights are compeltely different.

Standard halogen lights use reflectors to reflect the light down the road.

Cars that come equipped with HID project the light down the road.

When you switch and make your halogen car an HID one, the housings still try to reflect, rather than project.

    all you need to know.

By the way, I pm'd you a while back. I'd love to check out your setup. I also go to UGA.

I wasn't thinking of using an off-the-shelf HID system. HIDs function by stepping up the voltage from your 12V car battery to a few KV. The process to make them work also uses AC, and the lamps will flicker at that frequency. What I'm suggesting is to make them flicker at the same frequency a brute-force jammer would use. Even if it doesn't jam the gun, I think that it will at lease cause some interference and increase the effectiveness of your real jammer. For the cost of building a ballast, I think its definitely worth a try... Even if it won't work for people who don't already have HIDs, it'll be great for those who do to just swap out the ballast and have the lights interfere with laser.

Haven't been on for several months. The setup is nothing special, just the LI heads mounted sticking out of the crack between my headlights and bumper. I haven't even gotten a half way decent radar detector yet...

You wouldn't happen to be the guy I talked to about laser/radar at the bar the other night, would you?!

Never seen HIDs make much of a difference but if you build it, we will test it.
