Default Question about non-jammer laser countermeasures for the rear

Until I can afford a jammer, I am ordering some VEIL and probably getting a black bra for my S2000. However, my paranoia is setting in and now I am wondering about the rear. My questions:

    1. Is a Laser Shield legal/effective for the rear plate? Luckily, we don't have to have front plates in FL. Where do LEOs target when aiming LIDAR at the rear?

    2. Has anyone ever used VEIL on their tail lights? Is this effective? Are red tail lights even a concern? Would I only need to VEIL the reverse white lights?

    3. Is rear laser detection even possible? I have two possible problems: With my top up, most of my rear view is blocked. Also, I had my X50 hardwired below my rearview mirror, which may be partially blocking the rear laser sensor (attach pic below). I could move it to the left or right of the rearview mirror, but because of the curvature of my windshield, my X50 will point either slightly to the left or the right. I'm not comfortable with that.

    Thanks in advance!

    Where the X50 is mounted:

Veil and the shield will always be effective, however, will it be enough.

With your light car, I would suspect not.

At a GoL test we applied Veil only to Jimbonzz's transam [black] and it did a terrific job...Silver - I wouldn't bet on it (esp. under 1000 feet) - active jammers can have a tough time in the rear as well. Using both (active and passive) together is probably your best bet for silver/white rears.

Your X50 has very good laser sensitivity and depending on distance, gun, and angle has a decent chance picking up rear shots...A V1 has even a better chance. However, if you were to go active, they would do the job of alerting [and jamming].

    Good to talk to you!

Hope things are well on your side of the globe!

Not really, we tried once with Jim's black TA and were very pleased with the results.

On light (silver type) - rear shots with laser are deadly. Even with actives.

I would like to do actives with Veil - that should produce some very interesting results...Perhaps some time in the future when we get some.

    Cheers.

Things with me are good. Sold my car for now due to business issues, planning on getting a better one next year (black fast sedan).

You said you got pleaseing results? Could u elaborate further?
U dont get american cars here, so i'm not too sure what type of vehicle a transAM is?

I'd be very intersted to know how would say... a regular car, i.e. mazda or evo 9 would do on rear shots with veil & laser shield only?

    Pontiac (GM)

Similar to a late model camero...Check out Jimbonzzz signatures, to get an idea.

Are Nissan Skylines still available in your region?

How well were the results of that test? did you get a reading as soon as the car passed the laser shooter?

Skylines are quite common in Hong Kong. The GTR and the GTT versions. BNR32, 33 and 34 are all available for sale in many 2nd hand dealers.

The new skyline GTT is also available for sale. But the older ones are only 2nd hand.

HK has many cars that USA doesn't, and USA has many many cars that HK doesn't (mustangs chrysler etc.)

Here since petrol is so expensive as well as vehicle licenses, only the very rich people own higher CC cars that are above 3.0 litres, those would mainly be mercs or bmw's.

    Thanks VG.

I am thinking that until I go active, I might just be screwed due to my car. It's silver, plus with the top up, my RD will have a limited view of the rear. I was hoping that with a rear Laser Shield plus VEIL on the tail lights, I could get maybe a full-second warning before an LEO could get clock a speed on me.

But the rear of my car is so flat and upright LIDAR could probably get a reading regardless. Guess I'll have to put a jammer in the budget sooner than later.

So you're saying my best countermeasure may be a new paint job?

    Without a doubt!

    Dilip,

I was amazed to learn that 3 out of every 5 RR's end-up in HK. At least that was the case back in '97. I can't imagine what a Rolls would go for with the number 9 on the number plate!

WIth Jim's black car, I believe we were getting readings to about 400+ feet from the rear with an LZ-1. I can't recall specifically, but it was impressive considering we only used VEIL.
