Holla NC'er's!!!
Thought I'd post up and see if any fella NC drivers on here and what y'all are usin.
I've been out of the "game" on radar detectors.. so to speak on road travel, but have been doin alot of it lately and will travel more here in the future (mostly in NC, but thru SC, GA and Fla occasionally).
I'm Dave and I'm in Sanford and travel the dreaded Hwy 421 trap north thru G'boro to Winston-Salem alot. Havent been pick'd off (luckily had a lead foot mule out front of me)...
I do run detectors, granted ol' school (original Escort(s), original Passport, Bel 820, Bel Vantage3) and as you can see.... It's time for this ol boy to "update"!!
I still find though... cant beat the original Escort for K and X... probably why they still hang on the visor
Anywhoo... I'm thinkin the Passport X50 or the V1... I'm leanin towards the V1.. unless someone can convince me otherwise about the X50.. would love to hear any feedback from real world NC users as we in the same "hood" so to speak.
I need ALOT of slow down time, not that I boogy on down the road,, but I caint love tap my brakes on my 11,000 lb F-350 crew cab dually and expect to drop speed quickly as them small 4 wheeler type cars
Usually the CB saves my butt more than the detector(s) ( I run two in the big truck Escort up front on the driver visor and the Bel Vantage 3 out the back window passenger side - note I have alot of room in the interior so runnin two detectors isnt an issue with interferance). I've got ALOT of shiney stuff on the front end (stainless push bar and chrome billet grill insert) so I'm thinkin I'm a perfect target for LEO, but I do have the dark blue paint.. so that's a ok thing..
Anyhow... good to be registered to the site here! been a lurker for a while.. finally jump'd on in
Would love to hear from NC'er's, and definately would love to hear of anyone using them ol' original vintage Escorts!! (personally I love'm - even if they are considered ancient by the kids now days.....)... They still pick up X and K like a champ though.. lot's of it around Fayetteville, Spring Lake, Ft Bragg, Sanford and even on 421 N headin out of Sanford...
Anywhoo.. Dave B from NC drivin my Big Blue '99 F-350 7.3L Dually Sanford NC... Catch me on the NC angler (NCAngler.com - Dave B.) site if ya like fishin... and I do alot of boat towin too... (hard to slow down them 18,400 lbs of load quick!)
ha ha ha ha ha....

I would recommend any of the top RD's. The V1, STI or the 9500i are all good. Detection range on all 3 should be close so try each and see which suites your driving style best.
I have the STi and V1, and prefer the V1.
Do not use more then 1 RD in your vehicle or interferance between the two can occur and you will loose detection.

I visit relatives in Wilmington NC a few times a year and my 9500I works real well, especially on those noisy false alert strips of 10,000 restaurants.
I would recommend any of the top RD's. The V1, 9500i, X50 or the STI, if you drive in VA the STI is the only one completely stealth. If you don’t I would go with the V1 (most sensitive) or 9500I (quietest). The 8500 X50 is the most cost affective.
In the end do the 30day trial on the 2 you like the best and decide for you self.

Radar Fanatic
Hi Dave and welcome to the Board.
I myself live in Charlotte, NC and run an X50. I do mostly City
driving and the X50 is well known for filtering out the False Alerts
caused by door openers and other detectors that leak frequency.
The V1 is a great detector and is a better Interstate detector because
it's more sensitive to radar and a good bit more sensitive to Laser.
But, for this very reason the V1 will give more false alerts.
I choose the X50 over the V1 because of this. I find that the X50 gives me
that perfect balance that I am looking for in a detector. In fact, I've had
my X50 over 3 years and have never received a ticket. Now, of course it's
only a tool and you need to know it's limitations but from the sound of it
your an experienced detector user and use Rabbits ( Faster cars in front
of you ) to shield you from possible " Instant On " encounters.
It's all up to you but just to put my 2 cents in, the X50 has
saved me many of time.

Lead Foot
NC is not a speed friendly state. Last time I drove through NC I got pulled for 14mph over on the interstate. GA cops wouldn't even bother.
My roommate had to drive through NC this week and he got pulled over for 70 in a 65. He barely crept by a police cruiser and as soon as the rear bumper past the cruiser the cop pulled him. I've passed cops plenty of time here and they don't bother you if its a small speed.
The bad thing about NC is that the ticket (for 5mph over) is $30 but there is a $120 court fee. Thats a lot of money for a BS ticket. If any of you North Caroliners know something about the court fee let me know.

I guess I have been lucky, 140 on I40 and not a LEO in sight.

Good info Orbital, thanx... mmm.. definately got me leanin toward the X50 now... When I hit the brake pedal for an alert, I'd like it to be actual as pullin a load like I do at times is awfully hard to get down to speed when runnin 5-9 over.. so X50 is making more sense now that you mention it. No shortage on lead foot mules around...
Yeah, I'm pickin up what ya puttin down.. I know the ticket detector is only one tool in the box. Eye's peeled front/back/side to side and CB with audible verification via TD seem to work good together. My thing is range... need range.. I'm a big target for LE.. not as big as tractor trailer,, but I do stick out like turd in a punch bowel on the open road...
yeah.. NC is NOT a speed friendly state for sure!! Normal ticket is about $130.. one hundred of that is court costs... whether you show/plead or not.. that's up to you. Alot of folks will get an attorney to get the ticket reduced. (usually $250-$400)
Used to be, prayer for judgement or lesser charge of mechanical/equipment failure (produce some kind of statement that your speedo's off etc...), or, pay an attorney for a court no show on your part ($300) and it never happened points/insurance wise..
Last time I got a ticket I was rollin thru Roseboro (hwy 24 E) on the way back from Morehead (towin the boat) and got pop'd on the crest of a hill across the median from a HP on the roll... he nabbed me at 70 in a 55... My Bel radar went off... I stood on the brake.. just couldnt get my rollin load to slow down - gotta love them trailer hydraulic surge brakes! ha ha hah ha ha ha..... so I need a wee bit more warning time.. plus I'm not so crazy towin that fast with that kind of load any more (gas prices shut that fun down).. but that was 4 or 5 years ago or so... Registration, liscense, and on my way without so much as "did y'all catch any fish"... and $130 ticket without a thank you.. he did cut me a break though,, 65 in a 55 otherwise it'd of been a wee bit more $$ and mandatory court appear.
CJR238... I see them on 40 all the time... usually unmarked between Greensboro and Winston (SUV un-marked and motorcycles). I've noticed more marked cars from the 421/40 split there going into Winston lately. 421 thru Kernersville into Winston good mix of local fuzz especially on motorbikes.
Yup,, the NC road revenue service... that's all it is Polakatl. Local fuzz dont seem as stringent, NC Highway Patrol will ticket their own mother! Them boys are stiffer than a heavy starched sunday shirt....
I've always wondered what would happen if we accidently left the Raymarine 24NM 6 KW boat radar open array on... if that'd affect LE radar..

Good Citizen
I live in eastern NC and use the x50 and 995. Love em both. The KA seems to be a bit better in my 995 lately. I travel over VA, NC and northern SC and VA is the worst with LEOS. Just the other day i didnt see one LEO untill I got in VA on I95. I was 3 miles in and saw a undercover had pulled someone over. I saw this 4 more times within 15 miles. I saw two sitting up in the woods on 95 near Emporia, I still cant figure out how they get their cars over there.......
