NJ - Use of Decoy Patrol Car

Drove through NJ on my way to NYC and heading up RT 31 which is short cut up to 78 I take. Anyway there is NJSP barrack near this location and their is a Local PD/Township building on the road and I have seen police patrolling this section from time to time.

Well this weekend just as I was about to blast past someone I saw a Local PD car on the side of the road, it was perpendicular to the road and the side windows were completely blacked out tinted. Could not tell if someone was in the car or not, and as we know NJ uses LIDAR so I could not tell if someone was in the car ready to short LIDAR. My V1 was alerting K-band but I have gotten hits in this area before due to automatic doors.

Well as I pass the front of the patrol car I could see an officer sitting in the car. This guy was looking straight ahead with dark sun glasses which I thought was strange due to the level of tint on the car. Also he he did not seem to move. The more I thought about it this officer looked kind of odd. I think it was cardboard photo or something like that.

The few days later I came back the same way and notice the car again, this time in a different location. However, this time no one was in the car.

Besides it being an obvious decoy to slow people down, I was kind of interested in the fact that this car had completely blacked out side windows. I read and hear all the time about people in NJ being ticketed for tinted window and here you have Police car which was obviously completely illegal.

Guess the tint laws don't apply to the police since they're the ones who'd have to enforce it.

On a separate note, 31 sucks! But if it gets you where you need to go...

Yeah it does suck, but better then 202.... usually traffic on 31 is lot less on 202 and avoid 202 form the PA board to flemington due the high number of LEO looking for PA for cars without a front plate.

Once on 78, I can usually fly and make up the lost time.

I used a unmarked NJ state cop today as a rabbit in PA, I too was surprised by the limo tint. I would bet that only 5% of light can go through the windows.

It was not unmarked it was full decals and light bar, could not miss him....

If you have ever driven through linwood in nj,they have the darkest tint ever,but i think its just so we dont see them playing runescape on their computers

Isn't it ironic how they can have tint on their front side windows but we can't?

I think tints are illegal if you have driver and passenger side windows tinted. They don't care about the back windows. I got pulled over for having all my windows tinted in NYC. Officer told me my front windows were too dark.

Some, yes. My town uses K. You pretty much get a mixture of every band throughout NJ.

In NJ, you can have the back window, and (on a 4 door car for example) the back side windows tinted. Anything on the front side windows and windshield is illegal.
