Default NY state border, new sign that reads unlawful to use radar detecting equipment

I noticed on a new stretch of highway (rt 15 northbound into NYS from PA) that there was a sign stating that radar detecting equipment is unlawful, and had a posted fine.

this really confused me, because i had never heard of RD restrictions in NY.

    can anyone comment on this?

They aren't ... except in commercial vehicles (Big-Rigs). My guess is its a highly traveled trucker area... Can you get a picture of the sign?

I have not seen or read anything that ban's radar detectors in NY so. I'm going to agree with Airmore and say you didn't read the part about it being illegal for only commerical vehicles.

That sign says for non-commercial vehicles with a GVR (OR GVWR) of 18,000 LBS or more (or any commercial vehicle over 10,000 lbs).

Signs coming from Vermont say the same thing. People at work tell me all the time these are illegal and they read it at the VT border - Pay attention people, read the whole thing.

anyone else think it's a silly law, to make illegal for rv's and trucks to use RDs? i mean, they can't even go nearly as fast as cars

i think it would be extremely difficult for a LEO to visually ID a trucker carrying one once he pulled him over, (or even before) without doing a search of the entire cabin. that in itself would be overkill and a utter waste of time.
