Default Atlanta - Georgia Tech Police Laser

I'm not sure if it's new, but GT police are definitely using Lidar.

I got hit this afternoon for the second time in the same location. Both incidents occurred around 1:45 PM on Tech Parkway, behind the big GT athletic building. He was shooting traffic coming from Northside drive.

I was lucky today. I was at about 55 on Northside, but remembering my previous encounter, I hit the breaks pretty hard as I came around the corner. Sure enough my V1 went off before I even saw him, right after my foot went on the break. He then kept the gun on me till I passed him, oddly enough, in a manner that kept my very highly mounted V1 alerting.

I'm not sure if they're actually making stops though, last week the same guy just flashed his lights at a range rover that passed me going 50+ (PSL+20).

Laser is your main threat inside about a 50 mile radius of Atlanta. Not surprising.

Georgia Tech? As in campus police? I guess we know what they're spending all that tuition money on.

Why campus police need expensive laser guns when a cheap radar gun would suit their application just fine. Does the college or the campus police benefit from ticket revenue? Or is the campus police part of the local police dept.? I always thought campus police were more like rent-a-cops.

I'm not sure where the revenue goes, but apparently it's a state agency.

    From their website:

"The Georgia Institute of Technology Police Department is a fully operational State agency devoted to the protection of the campus, it’s students, faculty, staff and visitors."

They're real cops with real guns. They even have a SWAT team now. Tech isn't in a great part of town and before the Olympics in 1996 it was a really bad part of town, so a heavy police presence is necessary to make the mothers feel better.

We've even had a rash of armed robberies on campus lately. It's kind of surprising they don't have more important things to worry about than revenue generation.

Tech has had laser/radar for YEARS. I remember them using handheld radars out on Hemphill Ave when I was there between 96-98 (I doubt they were trying to clock me on my bike!). I drove through there a couple of years later and saw them using laser.

still not as bad as where I went to school, we had 4 different agencies patrolling campus: University police, City Police, County Sheriff, State Police.

Exactly what I was thinking. Students are getting robbed at gunpoint left and right but they have time to sit there and shoot laser? I know cops can't be everywhere and be there for you at every second of your life, but at least off campus you can carry to defend yourself.. As soon as you step foot on campus your in the "sitting duck zone". There is a reason why robbers choose to rob students, they know they are not armed while the person walking down the street off campus might be.
