    Default Georgia's serious about tags!

    40-2-6.1.
Any person who willfully covers any license plate with plastic, other material, or any part of his or her body in order to prevent or impede the ability of surveillance equipment to clearly photograph or otherwise obtain a clear image of the license plate is guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not to exceed $1,000.00.

Think twice before getting a plate cover or using Veil! The thing is, there's a loophole in the wording....
"order to prevent or impede the ability of surveillance equipment to clearly photograph or otherwise obtain a clear image of the license plate"

I'd imagine if it was a perfectly clear cover, and did not prevent or impede the ability of surveillance equipment to clearly photograph or otherwise obtain a clear image of the license plate, that a good attorney might be able to fight it.

It's an automatic court appearance in Georgia. GSP will nail you big time if they notice Veil on your headlights or taillights (they will pull you over primarily for it). They will pull you over for a clear cover as well. It's up to you to prove your innocence on this one, so why bother with the effort as it will cost you way more money than you will save in tickets.

There is legislation introduced to ban ANY type of license plate mounting frame. Basically no dealership ads around the license plate, no chrome license plate holders, etc. Not sure if it will pass.

I got stopped for it twice. once in NC and once in GA. Trust me it's not worth having any cover on your plate. Good luck explaining to the Judge it's not to defeat photo cameras it's to defeat lidar as an excuse.

No way I will ever put any cover over my license plates again.

Okay, just looked up every Ga Senate and House bill for the past year, nothing about plate frames.

I did find some interesting pending bills:

    -----------
Code Section 40-6-397 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to aggressive driving, is amended by revising subsection (a) as follows:
"(a) A person commits the offense of aggressive driving when he or she operates any motor vehicle with the intent to annoy, harass, molest, intimidate, injure, or obstruct another person, including without limitation violating Code Section 40-6-42, 40-6-48, 40-6-49, 40-6-123, 40-6-184, 40-6-312, or 40-6-390 with such intent. A person commits the offense of aggressive driving when he or she intentionally fails to provide a four-foot safety margin when passing bicyclists or pedestrians."

    -----------
Code Section 40-14-1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to definitions pertaining to use of speed detection devices, is amended by revising paragraph (4) as follows:
"(4) 'Speed detection device' means, unless otherwise indicated, that particular device designed to measure the speed or velocity of a motor vehicle and marketed under the name 'Vascar' or any similar device operating under the same or similar principle and any devices for the measurement of speed or velocity based upon the Doppler principle of radar or the speed timing principle of laser. All such devices must meet or exceed the minimum performance specifications established by the Department of Public Safety. Speed detection device shall not include any speed detection monitoring device that produces recorded images of motor vehicles being operated in disregard or disobedience of posted speed limits. Nothing contained in this article shall be construed as authorizing the use of a speed detection monitoring device by a law enforcement agency, nor shall any recorded image from such a device be a basis for a conviction or civil penalty."

    -----------
Chapter 8 of Title 35 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to employment and training of peace officers, is amended by adding a new Code section to read as follows:
    "35-8-27.
No agency, department, authority, commission, or other governmental entity of this state or any subdivision of this state shall authorize an employee, contractor, or subcontractor to exercise the power of arrest, including the issuance of a traffic citation, without ensuring that such employee, contractor, or subcontractor is certified in accordance with this chapter. Governmental entities shall routinely verify that all certified employees, contractors, and subcontractors authorized to exercise the power of arrest maintain a current and valid certification."

    -----------
To amend Code Section 40-14-9 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to inadmissibility of evidence obtained by speed detection devices in certain areas, so as to remove the restriction on use of speed detection devices on a highway which has a grade in excess of 7 percent; to provide for related matters; to provide for an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

    -----------
Code Section 40-6-40 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to when vehicles shall be driven of the right side of the highway, is amended by adding a new subsection to read as follows:
"(e) Upon any roadway having two or more lanes for traffic moving in the same direction, all vehicles shall be driven in the right-hand lanes when available for traffic except when any of the following conditions exist:
    (1) When overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction;
    (2) When traveling at a speed greater than the traffic flow;
    (3) When moving left to allow traffic to merge; or
    (4) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection, exit, or into a private road or driveway when such left turn is legally permitted."

    -----------
To amend Chapter 1 of Title 35 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to general provisions pertaining to law enforcement officers and agencies, so as to prohibit quotas or policies demanding arrests or the issuance of citations for the purpose of raising revenue; to prohibit withholding or threatening to withhold funding from law enforcement agencies under certain circumstances; to provide for investigation and enforcement by the Attorney General; to provide for related matters; to provide an effective date; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

    -----------

There where other highway/road/traffic/license/vehicle related bills, but probably not of interest here.

    I'm not planning to!

Just found the law pretty interesting.

    Here's the headlight law:

    (d) The headlights required by this Code section shall be maintained in proper working condition and shall not be covered by any type of material, provided that the covering restriction shall not apply to any vehicle on which the original factory headlights were covered.

    Nothing similar for tail lights.

Problem is its unknown how much IR light the outer lens reflects verses the inner reflector. Might be a fail sense of security, might not be. Someone could test it with a lidar gun and find out.
