Default Saskatchewan next for photo radar?

    Motorists - Say Cheeze !
    posted July 27th, 2006

A provincial government spokesman says it may not be long before photo radar starts taking pictures in Saskatchewan. The push is on by some mayors.

Kwei Quaye with S-G-I says it could be part of the strategy they've been working on with the police chiefs.

Quaye says British COlumbia showed how not to do it, by making it look like a cash grab.

One of the educational components of the Saskatchewan strategy will soon become apparent, when electronic signs begin appearing showing your speed as you pass.

Default Regina Mayor is on this bandwagon too

Speaking at a meeting of the Regina Board of Police Commissioners, Fiacco said photo radar would be a good way to enhance traffic safety and to enforce speeding regulations.

Default Comments on the mayor's plan

Communities that adopt photo radar programs ultimately find themselves in a conflict of interest. If they achieve their goal of slowing people down, revenue from the cameras begins to drop. By this time, municipalities are dependent on the revenue stream the cameras provide (mostly off the backs of safe and responsible drivers, by the way). The only alternative is for the city to install more cameras in areas where public safety is not the main concern, but where drivers are likely to modestly exceed posted limits.

Default more commentary on the plan

I think if Mayor Pat Fiacco wants photo radar to ensure safer streets and enforce speed limits, turn about is fair play. We should install Internet Web cameras in every office of every City of Regina civil servant, including Fiacco's office. This will ensure full value for our tax dollars, as well as enforce our wish that we citizens get what we are paying for -- service!

I remember last year was talking to this nice young woman from Saskatchewan... she told me a Sask police officer stopped her when she was bouncing off the speed limiter in her pickup (Saskatchewan eh?)... let her go... got to love those "natural Blinders"
