Operation Air, Land and Speed II takes place Friday and Saturday. State police will again be conducting roving patrols, radar, and aerial speed enforcement projects along the entire I-81 and I-95 corridors. The comprehensive enforcement project will utilize troopers, supervisors, aviation personnel and motor carrier troopers.

State police highway crackdown snags thousands

RICHMOND, Va. -- State police cited more than 5,000 motorists during a two-day crackdown Interstates 95 and 81.

The Sept. 14 and 15 patrols were part of Operation Air, Land and Speed, which yielded more than 20,000 summonses and arrests during its three phases, state police said in a statement.

The initiative, launched in July, was designed to save lives by getting drivers to slow their speeds, explained Col. W. Steven Flaherty, superintendent of Virginia State Police.

Last week's final phase resulted in stops of 1,826 speeders on I-81 and 238 reckless drivers. Troopers cited 988 speeders on I-95 and 370 reckless drivers.

Authorities stopped 23 suspected drunken drivers. Seventeen were on I-95.

Traffic stops related to the last phase of the operation also resulted in six drug arrests.

"The benefits of an increased State Police presence on our highways have been evident throughout each phase of Operation Air, Land and Speed," Flaherty said in a statement. "We must sustain that vigilance."

The first phase of the operation netted 9,315 summonses and arrests on I-95 and I-81. The second phase resulted in 5,999 summonses and arrests on the same two routes.

I've lived here for long enough to have learned that the most important thing to VA law enforcement is traffic enforement.....and of course we are the only state where RD's are illegal......among all other things.
