Default Legislation Puts National Ban on Radar Detectors

Great, Just great........ Could this really be happening?

Roy have you heard about this?

    http://www.i-go-cars.com/autos/legis...dar-detectors/

There is proposed legislation going through the Senate right now that will ban the use of radar detectors in the US. According to the legislation, it’s supposed “to protect the public from drivers who think they can speed with impunity by using radar detection devices.”

The legislation, sponsored by Senator Steve Oelrich of Gainesville, Flroida, would make using a radar detector a secondary traffic infraction, which means you could be ticketed were pulled over for another offense and found to be using a radar detector.

Ken Underwood, President of the National Safety Commission, is praising the bill. I suspect that Mr. Underwood is not a radar detector user:

“This bill is a positive step to protect Florida families on roads and highways from speeding drivers.”

Mr. Underwood went on to say that “Radar detectors give drivers a false sense of security that they can speed as much as they want without facing the consequences of breaking the law,” Underwood said. “Speed limits are important because they are proven to help prevent accidents and save lives, and using a radar detector encourages people to drive at unsafe speeds.”

According to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2005, more than 380 Florida drivers were killed in accidents where excessive speed was the major contributing factor in the crash. Apparently to reduce the danger caused by speeding, nine other states have prohibited the use of radar detectors, including Illinois and Virginia.

Already posted, and NO it isn't true, that article is in error. This is for Florida ONLY. "Senator Steve Oelrich" is only a "state" senator.

Great..... I was worried for a second...

Sorry I didn't know it was posted in another location.
I hadn't seen it before and thought others could chime in
    with more information.

Jim..... does this mean Florida could face the Banning of
    Detectors like Virgina?

Yep, but it will be a "secondary offense" that they can't pull you over for, so i would guess it's even less severe than Virginia if it gets passed...

In all honesty, this is a bad idea......

I can see it right now....... An officers having a bad day
because some pucks gave him a hard time earlier. He's
not in the best of moods. Your traveling down the
highway and all of a sudden ( Blue lights ).

    License and Registration please.
" Sir, do you know why I pulled you over tonight? "
    No Sir.......
Well, you crossed the yellow a few times.
Sir, I didn't notice.... I am kinda tired tonight.
I see that you have a Radar Detector
Did you know that it's illegal to have a Radar Detector in the State of Florida?

Remember Floridians ( Dark Mode )...........

    Default Much retardedness.

It's as if people think the only reason people use radar detectors for is to speed. This is not true as many others on this forum say, "I use mine to merely stay informed." It is a freindly reminder. Also nice to just "KNOW" when i am being targeted. It is nice to know deputy dog thinks im speeding so fast. When in reality just today even with my v1 i would have been toast if i would have been speeding. I just like to have it to know they are shooting me. Ya it may get used, or abused for that purpose once in awhile but only in the case of dier straights, and a real reason I.E. emergency situation.

    Ditto man,
Fire away if you need to! I just want to know what's being shot at me: from what device, where from, when and by whom. I know we live in the era of big brother and if I could buy a camera detector I would.
