Default New camera speed trap in Western Australia - what is it?

Hey all, have not seen this one yet... brand new to Western Australia. Anyone know what it is and what band it runs on. As you can see it is a double trap to read both front and rear license plates. I pulled up and watched this thing in action and it was flashing A LOT of cars. Very tricky. Images arent the best cause they were taken on a phone.

NEW speed cameras on the Hume Freeway and Western Ring Road could be on from tomorrow.
Victoria Police will announce today when the cameras will be switched on. Earlier this month they said they would be up and running by tomorrow.

Fixed cameras were removed from the Western Ring Road in November 2003 after a series of faults.

Eight cameras are on the ring road and 10 on the Hume from Epping to Broadford. They read vehicle registration at two points and calculate average speed. A fine is incurred if it's over the limit; a driver can travel legally past them but speed in between and be fined.

They seem to be at just the right level if you have a baseball bat handy.

I asked a copper (LEO) today about this. He said it's a new system that uses video cameras with OCR to read the number plates, and times the cars between the two cameras. Fixed (known) distance and measured time = speed calculated. He didn't know about the photo side of things, he thought it didn't actually take photos, only used the video feed, but if you saw it flashing then it must.

He also said they are testing it out because they can't prosecute (for a Multanova) if there are 2 cars in the photo. So this thing can be used for Multi lane traffic...apparently.

Scary thing is no radar or laser, and being portable makes for a difficult protection.

As if they don't make enough money from Multanova fines anyway, they need to go after the minor <5% that have two cars in the picture.

Could be tied into this http://www.radardetector.net/viewtopic.php?t=23990

    Interesting..

I am just interested how they can use this for speed detection without radar because one camera is on the front plate and the other on the rear, that means shorter cars would appear to be going slower than the longer ones - to inacurate.

Unless the camera was comparing the license plate to the licensing computer and taking a shot of unlicensed cars??

I encountered this setup twice in the last 2 days.
Yesterday at about midday on Mitchell Freeway southbound just after Graham Farmer Freeway exit. There were 2 tripods as shown in the picture above, plus a black tripod in between with a flash globe mounted on top.

Today on Mounts Bay Road (location in picture) just before midday.

Both times my RX65 alerted first to K Band 24.113 at a distance of at least 100 metres, followed by LASER alert as I got close to the units. The laser alert continued for a good 100 metres after i passed the trap.

I did not see any flash but no one around me was speeding. There was a number of officers wearing high visibility jackets standing away from the units so I'd imagine they're doing some sort of testing.

Default Mobile laser photo speed camera in Perth?

Spot on mate, thats exactly what i saw. At first i thought the middle tripod had a handheld connected to it, as it does have a handle at the bottom (as shown in the above link).

So the laser camera is a speed camera where as the other two are for number plate recognition????

Only strange thing was that my detector picked up the laser alert about 50 metres from the unit and was still alerting to it after i passed the camera - up to 100 metres after. I'm pretty sure it was facing toward oncoming traffic, unless it has sensors in both directions?

From what I've read (today) they have dual camera versions.
