Lidars became illegal in Florida?

Last month, Gov. Jeb Bush signed House Bill 1025 into law. The bill stated "any person who knowingly and willingly aims a laser lighting device at a person operating a motor vehicle, vessel, or airplane commits a felony of the third degree."

784.062 Misuse of laser lighting devices.--

(1) As used in this section, the term "laser lighting device" means a hand-held device, not affixed to a firearm, which emits a laser beam that is designed to be used by the operator as a pointer or highlighter to indicate, mark, or identify a specific position, place, item, or object.


So I guess it's possible that the "laser" device they made illegal is not the IR speed measuring devices the FHP uses, but rather visable laser devices. Since I'm not a lawyer, please do not construe this as legal advice.

i think your right thats what they have done .......

but the laser speed gun uses laser to get a reading!

so technicaly that comes under the same law!

it will be interested if any challanges down that route!

Keep in mind, unlike RADAR - which is a direct speed measurement device of Doppler shift - LIDAR calculates speed by first determining the changing distance (position) of an object (vehicle) over a discreet period of time. :wink:

Yeah, I don't think this applies to lidar guns. Lidar uses an infrared beam, not actual "laser," which is different. Infrared is harmless. Laser can cause some real damage.

But hey, I could be wrong...I'm not a Florida lawmaker.

I could be wrong, but I am reading that as a laser that puts off light that would interfeire with their driving. Police laser can not be seen....

lidar and laser are both exactly the same thing!

lidar light infrared detection and ranging...

uses laser, the reason why lidar is called lidar because laser is in the infrared spectrum!

you could have a lidar gun and a laser gun both of them use the same internals to detect speed.. the only thing is they have different names!

if they were different then wouldnt the valentine and escort have a lidar detector or lidar jammer!

i think when they were first brought out they were called lidar now they are known as laser!

but at the end of the day they are the same thing!

laser is technicaly dangerous but they use a class 1 laser and have been approved, they say they are eye safe!

but thats what they say, you'd need an expert in lasers to conform this!
