Newark council adopts stiffer fines for speeding


NEWARK, Del. (AP) The Newark City Council has approved stiffer fines for drivers caught speeding in the city.
Starting Sept. 1, motorists will be fined an amount equal to the number of miles per hour over the maximum speed limit multiplied by itself. An additional $15 will be added for each mile per hour in excess of 15 miles per hour over the limit.
Councilman David Athey says he wants Newark to be one of the areas in Delaware where people know not to speed.
The council also voted to use the money from fines on traffic-related efforts in the city.
