More people could speed if they would ban cell phones. It never fails when you see a left lane hog going 5 below the PSL they are yacking away on a cell phone or trying to text on one.

except speeding can be enforced with radar/lidar/vascar etc. there is no real way to enforce cell phone use. especially if your using a blue tooth hands free speakerphone. I don't use a headset I use my GPS's blue tooth so there is no way to tell as far as anyone knows I am singing along to a song.

If you are in an accident and they check your cell phone log they will know. Here one of the localities passed a lot so that if you are on a cell phone and involved in an accident it's an extra $500 fine.

So, I wonder, is everyone involved in an accident asked if they were using a cell phone at the time of the accident? Or do the authorities take it upon themselves to get a hold of cell phone records for all involved parties? I actually think the penalty is not a half bad idea, but seems like it would be a lot of trouble to consistently enforce.

I'm sure it is, but i would not put it past them to try and get your records.

They also look for the impression that the cellphone makes on your face when the airbag sandwiches it there

Both times I was involved in car accidents (one around 1 year ago and one 4 years ago) one of the first questions asked was if there was a cellphone being used while the accident happened. I don't think its a crime though or they don't care to investigate as in the first accident, the driver of the other car was clearly yapping on the phone and ran a red light, but was not cited for distracted driving.

    Here it is $ 150 fine + 3 points on 15 .

Altough wireless bluetooth is permitted , altough the safety
talibans wish to completely ban them .

The problem is use and abuse .... too many ppl abuse ... one guy on the
phone did'nt see the stop sign , without my own prevention it was
    a sure crash ...

I would not want my surgeon talking grocery during operating
me ......why did we accept the invasion on the cell phone in the first place ?

I confess I used a lot cell phone in the past years but realised I
mostly forget what was going on around me during my drive
    specially discussing business at wheel.

Technology promised us freedom ....did we , as society , made
the right choices ? In emergency/urgent short calls are great saver .

I agree that it should be illegal, but I think I would break the law from time to time. Sometimes its just not practical to not use the phone, for tactical reasons (timing, location, etc). I used them in Spain and Germany and they were illegal there, but I kept the conversation brief and hungup once I got what I needed. I rarely talk on the phone and drive and I hate doing it. I tried to have a semi-serious conversation on the phone the other day (b/c the person wouldn't let me hang up) and I realized I cannot carry on a conversation in the car on the phone. I kept losing my train of thought because I was too focused on driving.

Well there's the problem - you can really only do one thing at once. Some people have different priorities than you and would be sacrificing their attention on driving so they could maintain their conversation. That's how 6% of wrecks are caused, apparently...
