NC sheriff's deputies have a Corvette to stop speeders, seized from drug dealer

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — At least one sheriff's deputy in North Carolina won't have any trouble catching speeders.

Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that the Wake County Sheriff's Department has a Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Sheriff Donnie Harrison wouldn't talk about the car this week.

Chevrolet says the car has a top track speed of 198 mph, with a base sticker price of $74,875. Its V8 racing engine generates 505 horsepower.

County manager David Cooke says the car was seized from a drug dealer. Cooke says he didn't have any other details.

Wake County isn't the first to used souped up cars.

That sort of thing should be illegal. When police sieze cars from drug dealers they should sell them and put the money toward something constructive, but we know that'll never happen.

Well, they can be allowed to keep one to dress up as the D.A.R.E. car and show it in parades, but they shouldn't be used for speed enforcement.

That makes me wonder... when police sieze something of value like a car, do they have to report it as income and pay taxes on it?

You would think the feds would make them. But I wonder if it can be classified as a donation from the dealer.
