The West Fargo Police Department has purchased a Kustom ProLaser III LIDAR infrared speed-measuring device through funding provided by the Federal Highway Administration and the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
The LIDAR measures the return of a projected light wave to accurately capture the speed of a vehicle. Unlike conventional radar devices, LIDAR can be directed at a single vehicle and is undetectable to most radar detection devices.
“Speed enforcement around schools in the past has been difficult,” said Pete Nielsen, support services officer, who has been conducting training with the device. “The new LIDAR unit will allow me to pick the violator out of the crowd.”
The department is working on plans for an enforcement blitz in the near future.
