Attorney challenges Juno Beach van used to catch speeders

Updated: 8:21 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 North Palm Beach attorney Thomas Ryan wants a Palm Beach County judge to order Juno Beach to stop using a high-tech van to catch speeders.
In a notice filed in circuit court last week, Ryan appealed a $175 speeding ticket he got in the mail. He said the program launched in March is illegal.
"They are trying to circumvent the law and make their own little world in Juno Beach," he said.
The lucrative program has already spawned a class action lawsuit.
If he is successful, Ryan said he will sue the town for malicious prosecution.
While a city attorney warned the town council it is on shaky legal ground, council members claim the program promotes safety.
