DUI Checkpoints Planned in Calvert, St. Mary's Friday

    Posted on April 23, 2010

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (April 23, 2010) -- Police announced plans for a "border to border sobriety checkpoint" Friday in Calvert and St. Mary's counties. Officers from the respective sheriff's offices and Maryland State Police barracks will participate.

According to a press release, "Checkpoints are designed not only to arrest impaired drivers, [but to] deter others from driving impaired, and raise public awareness of law enforcement and other efforts to reduce and enforce impaired driving laws."

Police did not provide specific locations for the checkpoints. Police also made no mention of "saturation patrols" in and around the areas of the checkpoints. Historically, local police utilize both patrols and checkpoints in concert with one another.

Recently, the percentage of fatalities in motor vehicles crashes involving impaired driving in St. Mary's County has been as high as 60 percent, say police. The national average is only 41 percent. Police say Friday's checkpoints are are designed to combat this problem.

The average age of drivers arrested for driving a motor vehicle while impaired in St. Mary's County is between 33 and 46 years of age.

Holy $hit! Where is MADD??? This is an outrage, MADD needs to lobby to get the drinking age raised to 50 in Maryland so we can all be safe!!!!!!! A drinking age of 50 could be legal, currently ADULTS the ages of 18,19, and 20 are discriminated against in the name of safety (falsely too), so why not discriminate against adults for 32 years instead of 3 years? MADD must have gone mad by not lobbying for a drinking age of 50.
