Police: Watch your speed this holiday weekend

WASHINGTON - Motorists may want to be careful during the mad dash out of town this holiday weekend: Police will be out in force.
"For those of you who may be planning on shortening your travel to Ocean City by increasing your speed, don't do it," says Lt. Col. Gerald Turano with Maryland State Police. "Our troopers are already working hard on Route 50, and they will continue to have a heavy presence there throughout the summer."
Turano says enforcement in that area will be "strict, evident, and at times seem omnipresent."
A recent web survey ranked Maryland sixth among states for the high number of speeding tickets issued. Turano says that doesn't mean Maryland has more lead-foots than other states.
"It simply means that police in Maryland are doing a good job enforcing the speed limit and the other traffic violations," he says.
Virginia State Police will also be more visible this weekend along highways like I-66 and I-81.
