Default VA Speed limit bumped up from 65 to 70

VA Speed limit bumped up from 65 to 70

    http://www2.tricities.com/news/2010/...-81-ar-658163/

What I don't get is this,

"14 VDOT workers will have replaced 77 speed limit signs, all of which are 4 feet wide by 5 feet high and cost about $200 each."

Why do these signs cost so much? And if so, why could a 70 sticker not just cover the existing 65?

the highways here that were 65 have stickers on them. i'm guessing they're temporary. a lot are still 65 though. some have those electronic speed limit signs or whatever.

They are expensive because of the high reflective material they use. A normal sign with no reflectiveness is only like $12

    Quoted from Article>>>
“The increase in the speed limit from 65 to 70 mph in rural and less populated areas of the state will help Virginians arrive at their destinations quicker and safer and will speed the delivery of goods and services throughout the commonwealth,” the governor said in the statement.
I could hardly believe my eyes when i read this part. The Gov basically said a faster PSL will =/be SAFER. Esp coming from VA, now if he would just overturn the RD Ban law then I would really be impressed.

I'm not impressed with this change at all to be honest. Yes, they bumped up the max PSL to 70, but they have not changed the rule 15 over or anything over 80 is reckless. now it's just easier for drivers to stray over the 80 mark into reckless territory.

Thats such bull****...+80 is reckless? Yeah, maybe in a salvaged pinto.
Cars today are easily able to cruise at 80+ mph. And 70mph to 80mph is not much of a difference.
I cruise at 85-90 on a 70mph road with no stability, handling, or even gaas milage problems.
    Speed laws are uselss...

Baby steps , baby steps. If we expect/demand too much too soon from VA they will get dizzy and/or light headed, we don't want to overwhelm them GOV officials

I posted this somewhere else too, but here is a reminder. You only have to go 81 in the 70 zone to get charged with reckless driving which is a class 1 misdemeanor criminal offense. In excess of 80 regardless of the speed limit law is still on the books in Virginia.

    http://leg1.state.va.us/000/cod/46.2-862.HTM

46.2-862. Exceeding speed limit. A person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives a motor vehicle on the highways in the Commonwealth (i) at a speed of twenty miles per hour or more in excess of the applicable maximum speed limit or (ii) in excess of eighty miles per hour regardless of the applicable maximum speed limit.

Ouch. I would have been toast with my 98 in a psl of 55 leo visit a few years ago in my state. Lethal injection perhaps?
