Default Victoria - Speed camera sites publicised

Where the list is, I do not know, However this is what the news article says:

    Speed camera sites publicised

The locations of all speed camera sites across Victoria have been revealed by the State Government.

The list shows more than 2,500 possible locations for mobile cameras.

Police Minister Tim Holding says that motorists should be aware that they can still be booked on any stretch of road.

"Motorists can look at it at any time," he said.

"They can be booked either at those sites if there's a camera deployed there or by any police unit operating a radar camera anywhere, not just in those sites, but anywhere in Victoria."

    Then there is this one

A list of 2593 speed camera sites released today by the State Government is neither specific nor up-to-date, the Opposition claims.

Opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder has demanded the government reveal the precise location of all its speed cameras.

Victorian Police Minister Tim Holding released a list of the 2593 locations where mobile speed cameras are used, saying it would show speed cameras were fixed in areas where there was a high incidence of speeding and accidents recorded, and not in "sneaky" locations designed to catch motorists unawares.

But Opposition transport spokesman Terry Mulder said the Bracks Government had "buckled" under political pressure to appear more accountable, and said that its list was not specific enough to achieve anything.

"Why won't they have an up-to-date, specific list available?" Mr Mulder said. "What is today's release about? If it's not to keep the public up-to-date and if it's not about being more accountable, then what is the use?"

He said the Government should have released graphs that showed the location of speed cameras against accident data.

"This would show where speed cameras are located and where accidents are occurring, so we can be sure they are being located in high accident zones."

    Highest concentration

According to the list, the suburbs with the highest concentration of speed cameras include Reservoir, Preston and Thomastown, in Melbourne's north, and Werribee, in the city's outer west.

While the State Government and Victoria Police released the list of camera sites, they will not reveal how many many of the mobile cameras are put to use each day.

Mr Holding said that cameras were a proven way of reducing crashes, but said the specific location of mobile speed cameras would not be publicised on a day-to-day basis — as is the current practice in some other states.

"We don't want motorists to slow down only at specific locations, we want motorists to slow down wherever they are travelling in Victoria," Mr Holding said. "We believe a daily list would be unhelpful."

Assistant Police Commissioner (Traffic) Noel Ashby said publicising the location of speed cameras was an effective way of getting motorists to slow down.

"This is more about letting people know what we are going to do, but also making sure that everything we do is committed purely to reducing road trauma in Victoria. Today's release is another step where we can engage the public in terms of driving down the road toll."

    Busting 'myths'

Mr Holding said the decision to reveal where mobile speed cameras are located was also an attempt to deflate some "myths" about them.

He said speed cameras were fixed in areas where there was a high incidence of speeding and accidents recorded, and not in "sneaky" locations "at the bottom of hills or concealed behind rubbish bins".

But Mr Holding warned Victorian motorists that the list did not mean they could avoid speeding fines.

"This is not an exhaustive list of where people can be booked for speeding," he said, pointing out that roving police officers could monitor and book motorists at any time.

"Speeding motorists will be caught," he said.

Victoria Police would not reveal how many portable mobile speed cameras are used each day.

    Camera tolerance to stay

Mr Holding rejected a call from State Opposition leader Robert Doyle to replace a current 3 km/h tolerance on speed cameras with a 10 per cent tolerance.

Mr Holding said introducing a greater tolerance would encourage motorists to travel faster, and result in more crashes and incidents of serious road trauma.

Today's publication of mobile speed camera sites means that Victorian motorists can now access information about the location of all speed cameras. The location of fixed digital speed cameras and red light speed cameras are already available.
