in my region they have a dedicated Frequency for Radar/Laser operation
so when I ear activity on that Frequency . I know there something going on..
also sometime they reveal there position.. if you know a bit how radio works they have repeaters .. the police car send signal to the repeater then then repeater broadcast the signal with alot more power (on a different freq)
you could example program the TX freq of the car Sending signal to the repeater (that signal is weak) so a weak signal means he is close to you.. could be useful sometime (also know as bear tracker on some scanner)

My scanner does a great job picking up accident reports. I've avoided several delays with mine. But I've got a lot of different routes I can take to and from work.

I can't say it's ever tipped off a speed trap but I have heard reports of a LEO working a highway I was on so it makes me extra careful while I'm running on it.

wow. thx for the quick replies.

how do i know what freq the cops are using... and this is kind of silly but.. if i get a CB radio scanner thing such as the one on my previous post.. how do i hook that up with a lil wil antenna or something like that?

also, hand held scanners. . . are they better/worse performance wise?

    thanks!

p.s. erickonphoenix I have seen all ur vids on youtube. they are awesome. ;D

Thanks. Frankly I cheated and had radio shack program all the Harris Country frequencies for me. I like handheld scanners because I can move it between my vehicles. I use a Wilson whip antenna on my Wrangler and a Larson glass whip on the C6. Obviously the jeep gets better reception but the C6 gets ok reception too.

I always just assumed this day in age the police were on secure and encrypted channels and a police scanner no longer had any value.

I was also under the impression having a police scanner in a motor vehicle was illegal.

It looks like they are still useful though and people get away with having them.

"Event Horizon" has a video in his post here of a scanner in use in his car, the thing seems to show that the police conversations can easily be picked up. He's picking up the conversations between the police conducting the speed trap and their dispatch rather well...

There are only a handful of states that have restrictions (I know of no outright bans) on having a scanner in a vehicle.

Generally speaking, as long as the police haven't 100% encrypted their radio systems, you should be able to listen in, provided you're willing to pony up the money for the necessary scanner. If they're still using an analog (either conventional or trunked) scanners can be had fairly inexpensively, less than $100 used. However, if they're on a digital system, scanners are fairly pricey, usually over $400.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a scanner JUST to listen to the police. They are of very limited usefulness for avoiding speedtraps. If a stationary laser or radar speedtrap is being run, where an officer is radioing to other chase vehicles, you'll hear that, but if they're operating moving radar or working solo, you'll never hear a peep.

The Uniden PRO510XL CB RADIO. Is a CB radio, not a scanner.

Why own a CB Radio? Simple: It is one of the most useful and cost effective countermeasures there is on the highway/thruway. Can't beat truckers calling out LEO's locations 1,3,5,15,25Miles in advance.

Again, scanners and CB radios are different.

Scanners: Allow you to 'eavesdrop' upon (LEO/Fireman) transmissions on their radios (if your tuned into the right frequency.). Ever hear someone (cops) say "The call went out over the radio... shots fired on the West-side of Town?" that sort of thing, you will hear that on a scanner. I think having a mobile unit in your car in some states may be illgeal (though Im not sure, I dnk much about scanners). You can only listen on this device.

With the CB Radio: The Uniden 510XL and the Little Wil, you can both listen to and transmit information. Channel 19 is the 'unofficial, official' truckers channel. On the CB radio you can hear anything from what someone had for dinner last night, to how someones old lady fell on the ice in the driveway that morning.
On channel 19 on the thruway/highways, it is almost exclusively used by truckers to ask for directions and or locations of speedtraps.

Its both a very cheap and effective LEO countermeasure, and a good form of entertainment.

I can hear the "time stamp" calls when they take lunch. That helps a little if I've counted close to the max number of police cars on my route. Precinct 7 runs eight from 2-10. Certainly not an exact science but it seems to help.

What I hate is when I can't hear anything and when I roll through the tollbooth I look over and six of the eight Crown vics are missing from the parking lot.
