Absolutely true. Better to just pick up a handheld scanner and find out what frequencies are used between aircraft and ground units. Most air-to-ground for traffic enforcement is done using regular aviation frequencies.

Unfortunately, the use of a scanner in your car is illegal in FL unless you have a HAM Operators license. This does however, remind me of an electronics project I tried as a teenager. By making a few adjustments to a transistor radio, you can tune it to listen to air traffic control.

This could be useful if the speed traps use just that frequency. I have no idea if they do or not though. If someone says they do, I will go get one and see if I can get it tuned for this. I'll also post the instructions here if I can find them.

To be honest though, I think knowing about the presence of an aircraft over the lines would be enough for me to want to slow down.

I finally got around to installing the TPAS in the stereo opening in the dash. Since the on/off button is in the back of the unit, I wired it to a toggle switch on the lower left side of the dash.

The antenna, must remain vertical, but may be inverted. I used a 50 ohm antenna cable with BNC connectors on the ends to mount the antenna upside down behind the rear view mirror. Audio output goes through the aux jack on the stereo, so I no longer need the computer speakers and power inverter.

This is much easier to live with than having the thing sticky taped to the dash and needing new batteries after 4 hours of use.

I'm sure the police will be able to see your riced out dash from their airplane in the sky to determine your speed without question

Solo detector ...they had pulled over like 5 cars at this time ....the guy
in the sport mercedes was mad like hell ... we were his rabbit

Would it be a good idea : paint the top of a car a different color ....
a desesperate way to fight vascar ?

I'm thinking all top surfaces should be grey with shadows and light spots mixed in, all front an back surfaces flat black. This might even be best with grey interior and no tint on the windows.

I woould love to see somebody try this.

I'm not sure that we are going to have a pilot for testing, so it looks like the other option is to test with a LIVE trap. My guess is that no one ever posts test results because it is difficult to be in the right place at the right time for this. After a few weeks of just driving around hoping to get lucky, I think I have a way to improve the odds.

I'm posting this here in case anyone wants to get a PCAS and attempt the same thing. They will undoubtedly have the same problem with testing.

The Idea is to monitor possible airborne speed trap locations that are close enough that you can get to them while they are still hot. Here's what I'm doing to increase my chances of a hit:

1. Follow nearby highways that are known to use this method of enforcement using Google Maps on the highest zoom setting. When you see the white lines across the road, center your map on that point. Right click on the point and choose "what's around here". In the expanded menu is an option that will allow you to email the GPS coordinates to yourself.
2, Log into Trapster, and set up a text alert for police activity within a reasonable radius of each of your GPS locations.
3. Add a corresponding favorite to your GPS for each set of speed trap coordinates, so you can drive to each location quickly when the trap is hot.

Now, when you get a text message from Trapster, you know that one of your target areas is hot. Identify the target, turn on your PCAS, and follow the GPS to the test site. And of course DO NOT SPEED when approaching the test site ;-)

I have gathered coordinates of 4 possible sites that are relatively close to me. The more sites you monitor, the better the chance of a hit. Obviously, you are guessing that the LEO's are not setting up a radar trap at the test location. It is entirely possible to get the alert, drive out to the site, and then find nothing useful. This is still the best I have been able to come up with so far.

I'm hoping to have everything ready in the next couple of days. Not sure how long it will be before I have an encounter to share, but I will post it here when I do.
