Default Detector Performance dependent on Window Tint Type/Darkness?

    Hello all,
I have been reading around the forum and want to see if I can clarify some questions. I am looking at getting the rx65. I have a Ford Ranger, which came with no factory tint. I have put 5% tint on the two rear extended cab side windows and on the rear window. It is not the standard adhesive tint, it is Static Cling tint, so I can remove it when needed. It is like a decal/sticker you get for your car that you can easily remove and reuse, no sticky stuff. (Our state, MS, is getting stricter and stricter on tint regs.)

What exactly about tint effects the detector? Darkness? Brand/Type?

    How drastic is the effect?

And conclusively... will the static cling tint affect the detector?

    Thanks
    Jackson

Some say they do, some say they dont. I've heard it won't harm performance unless it's some type of metalic tint. Wait until someone with more knowledge on tint speaks up. By the way where did you get tint like that? I've never heard of it.

if it's Axus or Axius brand, it's the same stuff i have for my windshield, the static cling strip. it was a bit of a pain to do alone, but it works very well once up and looks just like the glue kind.

radar won't be affected by it ( unless you got some that has "metallic tint" in it).
laser will be nill to none also. behind the strip i can get a ZR3 to alert and a V1 and an STI to alert to laser. if it affects them on laser it is very minimal.

i got mine at a local auto parts store next to the regular adhesive type tint. i think walmart has it too.

    Thanks for the information.

As far as the tint, I don't think mine was Axus/Axius but I know that company makes some as well. Most autoparts stores and walmart carry it, just look for static-cling on the box.

I agree that the installation of it was a bit of a pain by myself. I am sure it would be even harder for a regular rear car windshield (my truck rear window is nice and flat of course). With 2 people though it wouldn't be so bad.
Cutting the material once it is on is hard since it is "thicker" than the regular adhesives.

Looks just like the adhesive, I like it a lot, especially if it won't interfere with radar.

I truly believe tint affects radar detection somewhat. I have 5% tint all around and a 5% tint strip at the top of my windshield. Perform this easy test:

When you find a Ka signal, remove the detector and place it up by the tint strip. You will notice the signal stops. Lower it a few inches below and notice the signal resumes. I have Lumar brand tint, and it is NOT metallic. I have asked and verified myself. But if in doubt find a weak signal (3 bars or less if possible) and try that inpromptu test for yourself 8)

Metal tint will slightly effect radar but very mild...it will however effect LASER reception...

The darkness wont matter uch...its only if it is metallic
