Default What Band(s) should I shut off?

    Hey, I live in MA,

it is mentioned that X K KA are all used

What should I shut off on my radar to increase sensitivity

I have never seen a X band when a cop is around, but feel I can shut this off,

KU is obvious (not used in US)

    SWS (not needed)

    How about VG2 or POP?

I received 3 VG2 alerts this weekend, I visually only saw 1 cop, so not sure if the other 2 were false or not.

I just got my Whistler XTR 425.

    What are your recommendations?

    Thanks

I didnt vote. IMO all bands should be left on. Use the city mode if X is a problem. Why buy a RD to detect and then start turning things off?

Recommend getting rid of the Whistler and doing some research here. Not trying to be an arse or anything, just trying to help you out.

You gotta turn off X here in DFW.....none of the police use it but there are alot of automatic doors that do...it will drive you nuts!

    Depends on many things:

Is X used in your state? your area?

If yes - leave it on.
If no - why have it on?

Pop - I believe happyass said it best,
"You have a better chance of getting hit by lighting than by pop" turn the stupid thing off.

VG2 - why do you care if if a vg2 detector is around? or should you - I mean the only thing it will tell you is if a possible LEO is around. But than they are only out to get the truckers, all of which are preety much vg2 undetected. Its preety much not in use. Turn it off also.

Haha, "not trying to be an arse or anything..." but you come across as being a complete a$$. And he didn't ask anything about DFW, so why junk up his thread w/useless info?

    And for Greg...
My feelings are similar to bauzer71487's. If your state uses X, K, and Ka, then OBVIOUSLY leave them on! Better safe than sorry. As for SWS, shut if off. VG2... if RD's aren't illegal in MA, you have nothing to fear so just turn it off. POP... well since POP mode actually provides better filtering and less false alerts on Whistler models, you can leave it on for the extra confidence from knowing IF you somehow get hit w/POP you'd be protected. However, if you turn POP off you get a slight increase in sensitivity... which obviously is a plus if POP isn't a threat in your area but is a negative because you'll get even more Cobra falses  .

    Enjoy your new RD!

Only shut off bands that aren't a threat! In most cases, any potential sensitivity increase would be very slight, especially when turning off X, K, SWS, if there is even any difference at all. I wouldn't recommend turning off any of these bands because of a potential slight sensitivity increase.

POP is a bit different, because in the Whistlers it is verified that having POP off gives you 2-3db extra sensitivity on K and Ka. So, you have to weigh the risk of having POP OFF and missing a POP alert with the risk of losing the 2-3db of K and Ka sensitivity of having POP ON.

as I was scrolling down the other post's. I truly expected someone to say that the whole unit should be turned off becuase it was a POS. I am really disppointed that nobody did that. LOL

I have no knowledge of the whistler line, so I cannot comment on performance either way.

But seriously. The only thing I would disable is the VG-2, it is useless, RD's are legal in your state, nothing to show a need for that mode.

Leave everything else on ( lose the SWS if you can though)

I consider all bands still a valid threat in almost all states. Just because the state patrol does not use a certain band, does not mean some littel po-dunk town doesn't make a nice chunk of change off an old x-band unit. And wouldn't it suck if you got busted by X, becuase you turned the detection of that band off.

Most door openers are K-band now anyways, and K-band is still a huge threat from most law enforcement.

Maybe I am wrong, but I would think people would want VG2 on. My thoughts are that any indication of a cop around is good.

Yeah they won't pull you over cause they clocked you speeding, but maybe they will pull you over for reckless driving.
