So what... my ancient Bimmer that I'm picking up soon can do 100 in 3rd as well
One thing to note, car power output hit a valley during the late 1970's and early 1980's. As a result it was common to see average cars with relatively low maximum speeds, 90, 95, 105 mi/h max. A few cars were faster but most weren't. But since then, we've been able to maximise emission control efficiency and increase power with using less gas, and thus speeds have increased - 115 is a popular artificially restrained top speed for cheap / family cars, and "performance" cars typically can do well over 135, often up to 155.
As well tire and suspension technology has allowed to increase the stability dramatically, and coupled with better brake technologies to make the car much safer at a higher speed.
Plus as roads have been rebuilt, typically the design of the roads is improved.
But still, I call BS for the most part. I don't think there are a great number of people driving significantly faster than before.
