So what... my ancient Bimmer that I'm picking up soon can do 100 in 3rd as well

One thing to note, car power output hit a valley during the late 1970's and early 1980's. As a result it was common to see average cars with relatively low maximum speeds, 90, 95, 105 mi/h max. A few cars were faster but most weren't. But since then, we've been able to maximise emission control efficiency and increase power with using less gas, and thus speeds have increased - 115 is a popular artificially restrained top speed for cheap / family cars, and "performance" cars typically can do well over 135, often up to 155.

As well tire and suspension technology has allowed to increase the stability dramatically, and coupled with better brake technologies to make the car much safer at a higher speed.

Plus as roads have been rebuilt, typically the design of the roads is improved.

But still, I call BS for the most part. I don't think there are a great number of people driving significantly faster than before.

Not until we teach our people how to drive. We could never realize an Autobahn style of roadways until we revamp our system of driver education, roadway laws, and raise a whole generation of drivers under these new methodologies.

True. But think about this. Cars have got better, safer and faster. The roads and speed limits have got :?:

Generally speaking, lower. In Ontario the fastest you can go is 100 km/h, but 35 years ago you could do 120.

Unfortunately technology will never make up for poor driving skills and human error. Driver's license requirements in the US are a joke. They might as well hand out licenses to 10-year-old kids without any testing.

Granted, but it's time we adopted Europes driving style. In area's of Germany it's un-limited, were possible. France, Spain and several other have 130kmh with it dropping to 100kmh in the wet conditions.
I think that's pretty fair, agree

Trouble is people know how to drive and the people who dont, tent to not give a s***.

For decades speed has been the only priority for bad driving, i was on a duel carrageway the other day when this is the 2nd time within a week that one prat has strayed across the lines and on my side of the road..

And the prat in question was doing some rather slow speed like 50 - 60 where i was doing about 70, and when there 2 cars lenghts infront and they do this its certinley scarey...

i was also accelerating up a hill getting to 60mph and there are 2 lanes going up and i was getting passed slow drivers who are doing about 40 mph ...

and theres a van or some type of pickup parked half on the road and half on the verdge.

just as i was passing a car on the right, because the prat on the left is going slow and he's ment to stop if he cant drive around the van without crossing the lines in the road..

so just as i was overtaking he see this pick up and decides to just drive around, no indication he just moves towards the lines...

I'm thinking he's going to hit me so i immediatly jams the brakes at 60mph the car, weaves slightly, and lucky i have abs and that kept the car on the road.. after i kept my horn on and belted passed the fcuker..

obviously on both occasions i didnt see a cop and neither did they get pulled for bad driving!

Apparently in the days before metrification, the 400-series highways had a speed limit of 75 miles per hour. Considering the roads were designed with a minimum design speed of 80 mi/h that sounds believable - but I wasn't exactly there...

cars have gotten so good that cruising at 100mph is no problem. the engines don't strain, and the car doesn't shake. You can comfortably drive at 100mph. I do it all the time and it would be safe, if other drivers were aware of the possibility of a car speeding down the left lane. Too many drivers in USA have no knowledge of the rule "slower traffic keep right" and really you should keep right if possible.

I travel down an open interstate about once a week. its a 200mi stretch of nothing. You couldn't persuade me in to thinking 100mph is an unsafe speed with good traffic and weather conditions.

A speed of 55mph is unreasonable on any interstate in the US. Traffic through downtown atlanta moves at 70+mph provided its not jammed.
