I want to legalize RD in Virginia

Hi, I know this has been done before but I really want to find a way to pass a legislation to make them legal in VA. I have written my legislator and I have sent some things to Tim Kaine (VA governor) to see if he will listen to my proposal. What I think I want to do is collect signatures and go to Richmond and show them that this ban or radar detectors is pointless and stupid. I really would like help and support from anyone and everyone. I would love to be able to make those signs before you come into VA "radar detectors illegal" go away for good and never come back. I know I sound quite cocky but we are the government officials constituents and they must listen to us because we pay the taxes that they place on us and they count on our vote to hold their position. I wonder if lobbying would help? If anyone can help me in any way I would gladly accpet their help and I will research any way to make a proposal that they can never forget which will help further the legallization of radar detector.

I would say you are better off leaving it like it is, that way not may cops would use IO, or VASCAR, that way there would be "no need" for it because people wouldn't have them.

I agree. VA is unique in that although detectors are illegal the penalty is almost nothing and the LEO's don't have the proper tools to enforce this law.

At the same time most people don't use detectors in VA. But the people that know how it works, use detectors in VA anyways are at an advantage. Because the cops here in VA don't encounter detectors at a high rate like other states, LEO's run more constant on radar. And the few times I've encountered instant on in VA it was sloppy compared to driving in other states.

Just ask anyone that uses a detector in both VA and NC or VA and MD. The cops in states outside of Virginia operate instant on radar with deadly precision and selectivity compared to most VA cops.

So the bottom line is because of the detector law in Virginia, it makes it a lot easier to not get caught speeding if you use a radar detector anyways.

A radar detector ticket in terms of cost if you are caught is the same as a speeding ticket for 8 mph over the limit. Both have a fine of $40 with a $56 processing fee, but the 8 over speeding ticket will put points on your driving record while the detector ticket does not.

So if you follow these steps:

1. Conceal the detector from eyesight.
2. Don't hit the brakes if you suddenly get a full scale alert on the detector, just let off the gas.
3. Altough VA cops don't have the proper tool (Spectre) to catch you electronically, you can buy an STi to prepare for the future if VA agencies ever decide to get Spectres.

If you follow those steps, use your detector properly, and undersand the detector alerts correctly..........chances are you will never get caught with a radar detector in VA.
I hope they never change the detector law in Virginia, it is perfect for speeders that use detectors wisely. I never feel as protected in other states as I do in Virginia.

I gotta agree with Stealth Jamal on this one where I live in Virginia all the county cops run constant on K-band all the time and the state troopers run ka band all the time which are detectable at a good range with the Sti.

Make RD's legal in Va? You must be crazy. All of what Steath says is true.

As the old saying goes "if it ain't broke don't fix it". It is easy enough to hide them and even if you get caught the fine is less then a run of the mil speeding ticket plus you get no points. Why in the world would you want to change a system which is easy to circumvent and results in less instant on, laser etc. then in the surrounding states that have legal RD's?

Please don't anyone start with the "giving up your freedom" stuff. This is a sophomoric argument at best. What making RD's legal will do is result in giving up your freedom to exceed the speed limit with little chance of a ticket. As the cops get better and better equipment to thwart the legal RD's you will be forced to buy better and better equipment to detect and/or jam them.

As I stated previously are you crazy?

Lot of good points in here, When I read the topic, I wanted to post saying you have a constitutional right to protect your property, and if tax dollars are paying to catch us then I for one, would use my rights to catch them.

But having read the above post, I see that the state of VA (and the other few states that outlaw RD's) may be the most stupid of them all. But, then, it is a way to get you into the 'system' to use it aghinst you in the future. And they will!

I live in TN and I am in the market for an RD and just doing research when I found this site.

StealthJamal is right I will hide my detector use my concealed display for my V1 I am hoping that the 1.9 upgrade will include Spectre protection. When do upgrades for the V1 usually come out?

I once heard that there is a Federal law that conflicts with the VA ban. If you could get a lawyer to find the law and bring it to light you might be able to win.

After reading all of the posts here, though, it seems that the detector ban isn't half bad, really.

See I think that is a waste of time, there is no reason to give it spectre protection except for the small canadian and virginia market. The rest of us who dont have to worry about spectre, would then have to pay the pretty penny for that protection because it will get passed on to us, and its pointless for those who dont need it. Even in the US market there are not Spectre units and there is no reason to get them, Virginia isn't going to get them because they don't take your radar when the catch you with it, its just a fine.

Just my thoughts.
