I was using that Passport RD in the picture up until the CHP started getting Ka band Stalker units, and I bought my V1 in 2001. Lack of Ka and laser coverage was a real concern.

I found that Passport to the be equal of my original Escort RD, but in a smaller package, and with a LED signal strength meter that was easier to see than the analog meter on the Escort. The X and K band range was really good compared to other RD's I had used previously.

Yeah pick up an old Road&Track or Car&Driver from the 55 days and there are at least a half-dozen RD ads...

    Here's a few I scanned a while back, a test of RD's from 1986:

Back in the good old days..early 90's, i had the Escort DSP x&k radar detector. That durn thing was blistering in detection, IMHO!!!

One of my favorite was a BEL Micro 826 (or 828...cant remember)....it was smaller than a computer mouse and was just impressive as all hell for the 100.00 or so I paid for it!! It has the Kband override where if it were picking up xband radar/door openers (back then, there WERE NO kband door openers!!) and a kband signal was detected, it would override the xband alert with the kband alert!
