    Default Laser Question

    Hi hi!

I was driving on 580 in the Hayward area today and on the side of the freeway I saw two CHP cars parked next to each other. I saw one cop talking to the other while one was holding a laser gun and shooting it at me, or the cars in front/behind me. During this time my rx65 did not make a peep. The first couple of weeks I had the rx65 it gave me laser warnings from cars driving behind me. I ended up hardwiring my rx65 up above my rear view mirror above the tint.

My question is: How much does tint block a laser reading? and, will turning off laser on my rd give me more range for Ka band?

This is my first time in real life seeing a laser gun being used. I saw all the news articles posted on this form this month and last month about CA buying laser guns and now it is a reality. Maybe if I get some money I will get a laser jammer sometime in the future. At least, I'm lucky that the areas I drive in are all Ka. I rarely go into the Hayward or SoCal area were they are.

I dont think that turning laser off would have any effect on the radar bands only because laser uses a different sensor. Thought i could be wrong, hopefully someone else chimes in with a logical answer

I think you're right but I threw in the question while I had the chance. :P

There's no easy answer for the tint question. Depends on the type of tint some have more effect than others.

Mike V on site does say that on sunny days the tint strip can actually improve performance since it acts like a pair of sunglasses to shield the sensor from glare.

Laser is very precise and I have gone through laser traps without any warning from both my RX65 and Sti. If you're shot at a long range the RD is more likely to alert than a close in shot given the narrowness of the beam. Also the RX65 is the worst at laser of the big 3.

I believe that the RD scans for laser with different "guts" than for radar so they do both at the same time so no change to radar protection.

I always thought the x50 was the worst of the top 3/4 and like.

It is going to be hard to get that laser alert to go off, unless the LEO randomly fires one at your RD, which I doubt. Paying attention to the sides of the road will get you farther than your RD will with laser.

As for will Ka range get better if you turn off laser, the answer is no.

Laser is detected with a different circuit than radar. Basically it's an infrared sensor that reacts to pulses in the 904nm (give or take) range. But whether turning laser off affects radar performance, depends on the way the firmware is designed. For example, a cheap detector might as part of its CPU polling loop, poll the laser sensor every cycle. Turning laser off may bypass the poll of the laser sensor, allowing slightly more time for scanning radar bands, but it may still poll the sensor but suppress the alert. Other detectors might use an interrupt-based setup for laser alerts, or a dedicated pulse detection circuit which wouldn't affect the CPU polling loop at all.

So in short, the answer is "it depends". In reality, it probably makes little to no difference. Most likely it's the cheaper detectors that would "benefit" from turning laser off, but on a cheap detector it likely isn't worth it anyway.

My sugestion to you from my experience is to place the detector just at the inbetween point of the tint / clear part of the glass. I have tested mine above and below this area and found if i place mine right at this point i get the best detection range.

    ???

For laser, the RX65 is much worse then the X50, the X50 is only second to the V1 in LIDAR detection.

V1-X50-STi-RX65 as far as lidar is concerned.

I know, but I just wanted to make sure my rd works.

I would do that but my rvm is in the way.

Aww! Thanks for the input. I was worried my rd would have to go into the factory or something. Glad I'm not the only one who has had this happen. California is quickly moving to laser in a lot of areas. Maybe I will get a jammer in the next year or so.
