Ok heres something to discuss.........say i go for a drive in ontario from ny........radar detectors are illegal there but i do not live in that country.....so i get screwed and have the rd taken and have a fine(that i would never pay) or im just let pass on my way....

Let's just say you are wisest to use the detector with care. Don't forget the nifty reciprocities between NYS and Ontario.

You could tell them you don't know it is illegal here and I will not use it anymore. Hope that will save your a$$.

its not a moving violation so there is nothnig on my license i believe..........or should i ebay my x50 and get a sti

i live in minnesota and drive into ontario on ocassion. i have never been questioned by customs when i have it mounted up near my rvm. i imagine they see it? plead ignorence is my best advice

Customs do not care (either side) i know from a little birdie :wink: but i am wondering about the popo and if they are running specrte i know i am invisible to all others but .....

I have an X50 on the way but after everything I've read here, I just ordered an STi (and the X50 will likely go up on eBay shortly!).

Not sure about Ont, but as you enter NS, there are huge billboards everywhere saying "Possession or use of radar detectors is ILLEGAL in NS. Violators will be prosecuted." Ignorance might get you off for having one in your trunk let's say, but I doubt you'd get away with having it on your visor. I guess it all depends on the cop and how good your luck is that day!

I've heard different things about Canadian Customs at the border I would recommend you take it down off your windshield if you enter Canada....

I'm sure you've heard of the term "Ugly American" its kinda like wiping your feet before you enter your neighbours house.

There are big signs at the border crossing advising you they are illegal.

Having said that I know some Cdn cops will cut US motorists a break if they catch you if you're not speeding.

Answers to your questions... I used to run a rd through canada all the time I used to be stationed In FORT DRUM, Ny 10th mountain Li anyhow..I never had a problem till one night like the 5th time I had made the trip to sarnia to cross the blue water bridge...I ran up on an opp officer sitting between London and Sarnia running spectre 3 He nailed me and i turned off my unit before i even passed his cruiser. I was in a line up of three cars! And he singled me out deadly stuff man. Get sti! I have also been told kingston is horrible for spectre 3. I went through there even drove right past the opp station and didn't incure any issues..I think i was getting lucky personally! I did almost have a problem in Toronto Once. I was on the 401 and I received a vg-2 alert! I immediatly turned off my detector. I looked to my right to see a opp officer heading towards the on ramp looking for the source and bogled when i turned it off! I thought wow that was close! Be very very carefull luckily for me the i didn't know line got me outta the one by sarnia and i have never gotten a ticket in ontario doing it. Sure saved me alot of time though on the 401! Valuable time I got to spend with my family on leave.

Oh and crossing the border take it down!! If they do notice it they "can" confinscate it ive heard horror stories. I always used to take mine down. The gal at the booth going from NY to ONtario over the thousands island bridge the one day even told me they where supposed to start calling the opp and notifing them of the possesion once you left her booth! This was something new within the last year..! SO watch yourself keep it stealth!
