How many of you guys in VA have been caught?

I've never been caught with mine. So far I have used 8500, X50, RX65, V1, and STi in Virginia and didn't get caught with any of them.

I make sure the detector is mounted where it can't be seen and I don't hit the brakes if the detector suddenly jumps from quiet to full alert.

In VA getting caught with an RD doesnt sound too bad, I'm wondering what happens up here in Ontario if someone has gotten caught? (not trying to hi-jack the thread) I'm just curious since my friend got a pretty big ticket and the leo told him to put his RD under his front tire and leave the scene. So there goes his RD on the 400 series highway and a nice big ticket. Has anyone from Ontario on this board got burned?

I have been running my RD for 2 years without being caught. As SJ said, I too have mine hidden and kill switch so I don't have to reach up to turn the sound off if i get stopped.

Someone on here posted the idea of getting a Cobra or something off of e-bay and keeping it under your seat. If the cop demands your detector you give him the cheap piece of crap while keeping your real one hidden. I imagine that this would work as long as he doesn't search your car.

Do the Spectre and VG-2 display the type of RD they detect or do they just say that there's one out there?

Just that there is one out there. And the switching RDs would be hard to do in time and not allow the LEO seeing you do it.

RE: carter. I believe that Spectre is being used in a couple of spots in VA (Ashland and possibly La Crosse). There are some old posts on this in the Spectre/VG-2 column.

But that hasn't been confirmed, correct?

I haven't seen any confirmed reports of it yet. And people confuse these things so easily with the VG2 and other techniques that you never know for sure if the person reporting it knows what they are talking about unless they are known good source of information. A lot of the cops don't even have the facts straight about what is what and what it can detect and can't detect.

The only 4 ways I can think of to find out for sure is:

    1. Call the department and ask them hoping whoever you talk to answers you correctly. Or ask one of the LEO's in person and hope they answer correctly.

    2. Surf the government website's hard to try to find out what company they buy most or all of their equipment from. I tried this with La Crosse PD, but they hardly have any info on the web probably because they are a small town department.

    3. Find out from a cop you know.

    4. Drive to the place yourself and find a public place where the department parks their vehicles and do a "walk through" to see if you can spot one.

Very true, I've got a funny one in regards to that. The other leo's I have talked to are not aware of anything about current or future spectre use. For the most part, they don't really care about rd's anyways, as its just a fine.

I am pretty sure that you can request that information under the FOIA act. You should be able to atleast find out where the money was spent........may not be worth all the time and hassle though, but may be the most accurate source of information.
