Default I need help in choosing a radar detector

I would like to buy a radar detector for my car. How do I know which ones are good and which ones aren't? I would like any input because I am clueless and don't much about these things, thank you very much

Its like a car. you pay for what you get.

if you get a saturn for $15000 dont expect highperfomance,in-dash gps, luxury goods. On the other hand if you spend $60000 you get it all.

Simple if you want a Top 5 RD.

    City:
Escort 9500i (possible solution after further testing)
    Escort 8500x50
    Bel Rx-65

    Highway:
    V1
    STi

    No particular order.

CANT GO WRONG WITH EITHER ONE! :!:

If you want a mid range which is $299 or less

    Bel Vector 995
Bel 895(radio shacks) or Bel 955 they are the same thing
    Bel rx-55

Stay away from cobras and Rocky Mountain.

Thats a pretty good summary. I would add that the 9500i is a new model which uses a gps chip which allows you to block out "false alerts" from automatic door openers a common complaint from RD users

The Sti is for use where RDs are illegal

Ummm... don't you think its just the tiniest bit early to be declaring the 9500i one of the tops? I mean there has been no proper testing done on it yet whatsoever. Mine just arrived, and as much as I'd wish it to be the best thing since sliced bread, I don't think its a good idea to be recommending it at this point as a top performer... perhaps list it as a "possible" top performer... that would be more correct.

i edited for you. The only reason i put the 9500i in ther is because of RadarRoys remarks that he would compare the range to the x50, and today i called Valentine Research and they told me that they tested its range and it to was exactly the same deteion range as the X50.

    Here's my post.

For under 200, you could get a Whistler Pro-73 for 150ish(from Roy's site). Also, the V955 is under 200, and has decent protection.
There are plenty of people on here that have and recommend the Pro-73.
As for the Bel model, not many people have tried it out since alot of Beltronics models seem to have the same performance, but with less features. For example, it is said that the V995 has the same performance as the RX-65, but with less features. The same deal goes with the V955 and V940.

Depending on how much you speed (5 over, 10-20 over, etc) sometimes a mid level radar will be sufficient.

Apparently, only K and Ka are the only radar bands used in your area. Any of the above RDs should provide decent protection. Just remember to not rely on them too much as your warning time may not be that great.

Go for the Bel 895(radio shack) or 955 anywhere else you look. Its a decent RD of under $150
