Default Hiding a STi for a truck driver

I have been lurking around this fine site for some time so please overlook this being my first post. I have searched for a while now and I'm not finding what i want so please bear with me if this has been answered.

Based off of everything I have read I bought a Bel STi Driver as I am a semi truck driver and we are not allowed to have a detector of any kind so I figured I would get one that 'they' can't detect.

Now the problem I am having is where to mount it. I'm thinking beyond the whole high low or middle of the windshield. I have to make sure no one can see it at all. I'm wondering just how out of the way I can mount it and still have it be effective. If it is slightly visible I need to be able to toss it into my sleeper quickly if the need arises. I'm not all that worried about local cops seeing it. I'm high enough I think I can keep them from being nosy. I'm thinking more about going threw DOT scales.

I do have an XM radio and a cell phone already suction cupped to the lower/center windshield area. I could use that to hide it somewhat. Will those being right next to the STi effect it to bad?

If there are any other truck drivers that are in the same situation I'm in a newer 9400i International mid-roof if you have any ideas.

    Thanks in advance

I would put it on a visor (don't know if trucks have em???) I would then put a cd holder on the visor so that it is sandwiched betweent he cd holder and the visor. I have seen this setup before and it is very effective and stealthy.

Whole bunch of places you can put it. Roy sells a "visor case" that can be used with the STI to mount it in the visor. This is pretty good but it makes it hard to use the visor. Personally I never use it anyway (sunglasses to the rescue).

Being so high and having a nice wide dash area you can do all kinds of things. You could just suction-cup it on the window and rip it off when getting to a scale. Or you could use the Velcro that comes with the unit and stick it to the dash if the dash is parallel to the ground and has a good line of sight.

To keep it effective you'd want to have it parallel to the ground and having a clear sight through the windshield (if you want to get any laser reception). If you're willing to forego the laser (probably not worth much anyway) you could cover it with some kind of fabric or plastic material, eg baseball hat...

    First of all. Welcome truckerjaw
Straight away your at such an advantage being so high above the ground. First of all, putting the RD anywhere on your driver side with a level and clear range down the road would be excellent. I say this because it's easy to get to and remove.
Even though it's an STi, stealth is your main priority and out of view of any lurking eyes. Besides, they would have to know what they are looking for, correct
The STi, if you may know? Has a thin metal suction cap mount for the windscreen. Truck wind screens are quite vertical, so don't be to put off bending this mount to the right angle. If this is not cool, and like our experienced members said, velcro or visor case are most ideal too. Take care and let us know how you go m8 8)

I was a long haul driver and remember talking to a driver who was accused of possesing a radar detector. Apparently whatever they were using at the DOT scalehouse alerted to his CD player on the dash.

    So much for accuracy.

Thanks for all the great responses.

I never thought about hiding it with a CD case on the visor. I might give that a try when I get a case or order that one radarroy pointed out. For now I have it set on the dash set back between my XM and cell phone mounts. It sits back far enough that about the only way it can be seen is by someone climbing onto the drivers side of my truck or the windows for checking permits at some scales. As long as its off or 'blacked out' it should work fine for now. I'm going to buy a red handkerchief to lay over the mounts covering it from the top and sides (matches display lights in case i forget to dim it and I have all red interior lights in the cab so its light will be hidden). If I'm asked I'll just say i pull it over the radio and phone for heat and theft protection. I also installed the Smart Plug threw my dash so the wires are gone from sight and the remote volume switch is down by my shifter so I can turn it down with out touching the main unit. and no one is the wiser.

Again thanks for all the great ideas. Everyone of you pointed out a little something I had never thought of. If you think of more feel free to let me know.

I highly recommend this. It does an EXCELLENT job hiding the STI while not diminishing its performance
